Companion hitches by B&W are the best . Just picked up my new 3520 go and would never made it with regular fifth wheel hitch that bolts together . What are other members using

Welcome to the forum. If you haven't had a chance to read it, we've put together a welcome letter that should make your forum navigation a little easier.

I can't comment on my favorite FW hitch since I'm a travel trailer owner, but I'm sure other members will chime in.

Rwollfy233 I run a Pullrite Superglide Puck mount.

B&W makes some nice stuff, but I wanted an auto slider.

Also the support arms for the head bolt in on the companion.

I also like the single rotating lock on the Pullrite vs the jaw system as used on some of the others.

I've been using a Reese 16k adapted to Ford puck system. I don't need a slider with the 8 foot box.

We are new to fifth wheel towing having had MH's in the past. Recently purchased a 295RL reflection and towing with a 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500LTZ w/6.2. Have Pullrite Super slider hitch which works OK but trailer sits to close to truck bed for my comfort. Does upgrading to a 2500 or 250 truck and different hitch help that situation?
          Thanks

In my 2500 i can lower the tail gate. I don't think you are going to get any more room with a larger truck. The 3 bed lengths used are super short, Standard (6.5') and long (8'). The long bed will have the least clearance from tailgate to camper, but most clearance to cab, short bed will be the next increasing tailgate to trailer clearance but decreasing trailer to cab clearance, and the super short bed will have the most tailgate to trailer clearance, but least trailer to cab clearance.

Both of my 5ers looked like the pinbox was going to be in the tool box. I do need to change the setup of the superslide as the previous dealer did set it up one hole off moving the hitch toward the tailgate, thus putting the kingpin behind the rear axle and pulling weight off the steer axle. That being said, CHECK YOUR SETUP, supposedly the tech read the instructions carefully ensuring he put the hitch together correctly, but I have found numerous errors starting with the head being too tight and not flexing side to side, the front stop had more clearance than break-in, no lubrication in the critical areas, and just recently looking back through the instructions again, the feet are in the wrong spots.

I see this is your first post . . . welcome to our owners technical forum.

It is not clear from your post as to whether you are asking about vertical clearance between the 5th wheel overhang and the truck box rails . . . or distance between the back of the truck and the trailer. Both are adjustable, but only by a few inches. I think that you will find that the distance between the truck rear axle and the truck rear bumper is consistent across most trucks. Differences in box length goes with changes in wheelbase and is forward of the rear axle. Ford does a good job of publishing these dimension for all their trucks. https://madocumentupload.marketingas...a2f0c&v5=False I cannot find similar data for GM . . . perhaps someone knows where this is?

I use a manual slider hitch, in part to provide generous clearance between back of truck and front of trailer until we are ready to tow.

There seems to be some difference of opinion on whether the distance from the rear axle to the rear bumper on a pickup is a standard distance or not. I spent a few minutes surfing the web but was not able to find a definitive answer. Does anyone have an citable resource one way or the other?

My go to site for information GM is HTTPS://GMUPFITTER.COM and Ram has a similar at http://www.rambodybuilder.com/year.pdf (not safari does not like this site).

For the ram I would use https://www.ramtrucks.com/BodyBuilde...B5Yru0rt180%0A
For the GM i would use https://gmupfitter.com/files/media/p..._PU_063017.pdf
For Ford, you are on your own, but try the website: https://fordbbas.com/publications

I do not think there is a standard from axle to rear of bumper, but they are going to be close.

Thanks for the replies, I was referring to and should have specified, the vertical clearance between truck bed and trailer. Yesterday I did hear back from Pullrite and was advise there is an optional 3" riser bracket that can be added to raise hitch height, which should give me the clearance I am more comfortable with.
                    Thanks again.

jrhogan Do you have any adjustment left in the inbox? I know mine has 1 or 2 holes left it can be lowered to increase the over rail clearance.

With any 5er hitch setup, the biggest issue may become trailer not being level when hitched.

Addressing jrhogan: we are this week hopefully purchasing a GD 295. We also have a Pullrite hitch and have only 4" clearance between top rail of p/u and fifthwheel. A 3" riser kit will be installed to help with clearance. My concern now is how level we will be. We shall see. And by the way we have GMC 2500.

I think I have almost 6" of clearance between the top of the bed and the bottom of the overhang. Our driveway is not level, and i have been in and out of a couple of decently questionable driveways with no issues.

I can state with my Goosebox (not sure if the same would be true with a conventional hitch) I have had contact between the bed rail at the rear corner with the overhang of the fifth wheel. I’m level with 7” of clearance. I was backing into a site I should have never attempted, downhill and off camber, so pretty much the worst possible combination, but it still happened.
