  • Backup Camera - Using what I have first, then decide if prep is needed

Moderators, if this the incorrect forum to post this, please help me find the correct one. Thanks!

Hi all! In preparing for a multi-month cross-country trip beginning in May, we wanted to make good use of our current camera system in lieu of the Furrion prep supplied by GD on our new Momentum. I'm currently using a 4K dash cam system with a rearview mirror-like screen with additional input from a rear camera mounted on the rear bumper of my truck.

On our previous bumper pull TT, I was able to extend the wiring under the unit and up the back wall to the camera prep location where I mounted the small 1080p camera to act as the rearview in the cab of the truck. That was for a short trip and had duct tape holding the wiring to the back exterior wall of the TT, not ideal for this upcoming trip in the new unit.

With knowing the history of this application, I would like to accomplish this on the new unit with one of the following scenarios:
    1. Run extension wire from hitch wiring point, through the ceiling the length of the unit to the prep location on the rear exterior wall (preferred method)....OR
    2. Run extension wire from hitch wiring point, underneath the length of the unit, and into the side wall to traverse up to the prep location... OR
    3. Source a wireless transmitter/receiver set that works with the system to avoid running extension wiring.
I'm laying out all of this ground work to get feedback or alternative measures to attain similar results and to ask if there is a common wiring races/space in the ceiling/basement/walls of the unit to accomplish the above scenarios or if the prep location has more than 12v power run to it.

Any insight into this is much appreciated!
Please assume that if I’m asking, I’ve already searched the manual.

    Ellis32198 ,
What you see is not "pretty" but when I added Ford's rear camera setup I attached the wiring to the exterior after snaking it along the frame.

Not for everyone...but it works. I've had what you see below on the trailer since ~March 2019 without any issues. Those small squares are self-adhesive. They were attached after cleaning the mounting point with alcohol to ensure a clean attachment. I then silicone'd around all the edges of each square to ensure no water penetration. The wire is attached with zip ties (I've had to replace a few of the zip ties over time with ones more tolerant to exposure).

Looks sufficient howson , hey, you gotta do what you think works best for the scenario and be able to live with constantly seeing that result. Do you have any details about those self-adhesive blocks? Thanks for the feedback!

What I used was nothing special. It has worked (so far).

If looking now I'd try to find something similar that's meant to be exposed to UV.

Here's an example from lowes.com of what I used (but probably wouldn't again if there was something better): https://www.lowes.com/pd/Utilitech-1...-Ties/50005764

This is one reason why it went for wireless camera with its own separate display versus connecting into the pickup truck dashboard display. I don’t have mine hiked up yet so speaking only from spec sheets and not actual experience. Kudos to howson for the clean cabling you did :-)

Hey Sailor_Joe, I agree with your reasoning for that. The system I'm using is actually separate from the backup cam on the truck,

it's a dashcam with a rear cam that I was able to extend to the rear of my previous rig to act as a "rear view" behind the travel trailer. I'm now attempting to accomplish the same result with our new rig.

I have been able to source the equipment needed to wirelessly extend the cam to the rear with
