  • tested lazy way to remove Curt 24k from TV bed

    I think the curt 24k slider weighs 281 lbs. I'm not currently using it as we bought a bumper hitch. I wanted to find any easy way to remove it from the bed.

    Here's what I did;

    1) put a large lag screw in the double garage door header.
    2) buy a cheap 4 pulley block and tackle
    3) put a pin in the hitch.

    Then, back under the garage header, lift it up with the block and tackle, drive out, and lower it on a furniture dolly. The entire process took less than 10 minutes.

    jlackman Nice way to remove one. I don't have a garage, so i'm stuck a bit differently. I have 2 - 10' 2x4's that I put under the puck feet and tool box. I slide the hitch out till its only resting on 2 fo the puck feet and then lower it letting it pivot till vertical. From there I put it on a hand truck (dollie) and drag it around to where I store it. Need to make something that keeps the 2'x at an equal distance so it don't slide off of them when sliding it in or out.

      Leave trailer hooked up to truck and hitch. Disconnect quick releases on hitch to truck. Raise trailer landing legs to lift hitch and drive truck away. Level trailer. To reinstall, reverse the process.

      No, the weight of the hitch will not harm the trailer. Think of the loads that hitch is subjected to on the road. A lot more than ~200 lbs. of force.

        that's a great idea; never thought of that approach. we ended up buying a bumper hitch for our first new rig. We rented 5 different types last year including 5th wheel which helped us settle on Grand Design. The plan is to use this 1-2 years then move to a bigger 5th wheel.

          JeffC leaving the hitch hooked up would be great if I stored the camper inside. With the slider, it needs to be stored out of the weather to keep the rails from rusting. Putting it back in the bed and aligning the pucks would also be a challenge, would need to lower the hitch, disconnect from camper, pull forward, set in pucks, then reattach. If I had a place with a good overhead I would do something similar to Jlackman, or get an engine hoist and pick it out that way. For now, I just pull the head and slide it off the back on the 2x's then grab it with the hand truck. Plans are to put a bar on the truck so it catches the head pivots.

            Of course you have to pick the solution that is right for you. If I knew it all I would charge more for my advice
