  • Pin Box Question

I have seen many post that pin weight on our unit,337 RLS, will reach 3000 lbs. +. Ours has the standard solid pin box. I just noticed that it is stamped, max weight 3100 lbs. That seems cutting it really close to max weight?

Based on a GVWR of 13,999 lbs it looks like the engineers designed for approximately 20% of the load (2,799 lbs) to be on the pin which is with in the norms for the industry. With that said, the 3,100 lbs max load on the pin is not the ultimate load that the pin can carry. There are several safety factors engineered into the design of pin to assure that it can safely carry the stamped load. This doesn't mean that the stamped maximum load can be ignored. It does mean that as long as your pin weight is at or below 3,100 lbs, which you will want to for your trailer to tow properly, you can travel without worry, at least as far as the pin weight is concerned.

Another rating to check is the maximum vertical load on your hitch. Hopefully it is equal to or greater than your pin rating..

We also have a 2020 337RLS with the standard LCI pin box (LIPP1621). Per the label, the pin box GVRW is 15,500 lbs. I have looked for a max weight rating that @M&K337 mention but can't seem to find it on the box. Where would it be stamped? Click image for larger version

MAW7228 Ours is on the left side of the pin box stamp into the metal. Our sticker is on the curbside.

JBill9694 In most things I deal with, I understand that exceeding manufacture specs is possible if necessary. I would prefer not to do so on a regular basis or for an extended amount of time. I guess my concern comes from it being a LCI product. However, I do not ever recall hearing of a king pin failing under normal use.
We are considering an upgrade to the MORryde pin box for a smoother tow.

@M&K337 Thanks for sharing your photo. I'll check for the stamping on the pin box later this week. Let us know if you proceed with the MORryde upgrade and how it works for you. We have been thinking of an upgrade as well. Thanks.

Thanks, for sharing the picture of the weights stamp. This is the first post I have seen with this. This appears to be a new stamping being done by LCI. W/O knowing more about this, my first reaction would be similar to yours that this limit of 3100 lbs. seems marginal at best for the 337 based on real world pin weights shared by owners over the years. Hmm.

Possibly you may want to contact LCI and solicit their feedback and possibly GDRV Customer Service as well.

I finally was able to get out and check our pin box for this stamp. Must be new for 2021 models since our 2020 unit does not have it.

This is the tag on our pin box. I still want to see what GD and LCI say. I have been sidetracked but should have time tomorrow.

The RPO number is crucial--be ready to read that to the Lippert representative. This is true across all Lippert components--there are RPO numbers on doors, windows, etc. The RPO number allows the Lippert rep to identify exactly what's being questioned.

I don’t want to just leave this hanging, so here is the latest. I did contact GD on 5/11. Customer service did not have an immediate answer. They had me email some information from the rv. So far have not had any further contact. Have emailed a couple of more times. Will try by phone Monday.

Latest update: I did receive a reply from GD today. It appears LCI is not responding to them. I guess I will see what happens if I work from the other side tomorrow.

Just another update on this thread. Still no answer from GD. I did contact LCi, of course I got the vague and indirect response. Summary is they said it will handle more than it is rated for so should not be a problem... Of course I don’t think I could get that in writing.
