  • Can I tow an Imagine 17MKE with a Lexus GX470?

Looking at Lexus GX470 SUVs in the 2004-2008 range, all of which have 6500lb max tow caps...and I've gotten green-lighted by a handful of experts on towing my Imagine 17MKE, which has a GVWR of 5795lbs. Anybody help me with the "clinching" arguments on this, please? I've got a Fastway 2pt 6K weight distr./sway hitch awaiting to be attached...and I can't wait to hit the road!

    Welcome to the forum.
The towing capacity and the weight that the vehicle can handle are two different things.
Vehicles of all types have a "payload" or "cargo" rating that is specified by the manufacture. This is usually a sticker on the door jam area that states "cargo or payload should not exceed....." insert your number here. What this states is the vehicle is designed to travel at a certain weight. For an example, your sticker may say 1000# cargo weight. What this means is that everything that you add to the vehicle after original purchase from a dealer comes off of this number. Add a set of mud flaps , subtract maybe 20#. What this all comes down to is that the hitch added to the rear of the vehicle that attaches to the trailer is counted as weight to come off of your sticker, your weight and anything added also comes off of that sticker. The trailer has "tongue" weight , this also comes off of that sticker. So when this is all said and done if you still have a little weight on the sticker left or you are at the break even point then you should be good to go.
If you are still reading , I hope this is not to much blah blah , I am not the weight police but hope to help people understand what there vehicle is "capable" of and not what the "Towing capacity" rating says it can do. Staying with in the sticker numbers helps to keep you and your family safe as well as everyone else on the road.
I hope it all works out for you and you get on the road and enjoy traveling.
