  • New tires TV, pressure advice please

Bought new tires for my TV. I thought my old tires which were Generals were a lesser tire than they actually were. Label on the door says "35 PSI". Looking at Discount for this tire it gives a range from 44-80 PSI. I was running 44 when pulling the rig. I bought Coopers that are the same 10 ply, load range E1, 80 PSI max.

What I am seeking is advice on towing pressure. Thanks for the input.

Drop by a scale with the trailer attached and get a rear axle loading. This will tell you the pressure you need. However when towing I set my rears to max pressure and up the fronts to close to max. I'm guessing with a loaded hitch weight of about 800lbs you may be a little light on pressure. Also soft tires (soft sidewall) tend to increase sway and handling problems so increasing the pressure can help. Are you using a WDH? Also when towing check the tire temperature - if hot air them up.

    Safe travels

We generally are not loaded on the heavy side and yes, I do use a WDH. I'm going to be setting up a new one and wanted to wait until I got the new tires. On the Transcend, our pass-through weight stays constant as I don't add or subtract from it. Our behind axle weight on the tow vehicle is also not overloaded. I also use a TST Systems tire monitoring system. Reads heat and PSI. Infrared gun for hub temps. I'm thinking maybe 70 front and 75 back (was suggested elsewhere).

BillinTexas Bill, Be advised that not all rims can handle the higher pressures. You will need to find the load vs psi chart for those tires and use the proper pressure for your axle weight.

Joseph, the OE tires were the same so I would imagine the rims can handle the pressure. The is equipped for towing and I'm at 82-84% of max capacity. Appreciat the comment.

Running the same Truck just not Pro4X. I have Bridgestone E rated and I don't go over 65PSI COLD due to pressure limits of the rim/wheel. If you have the 20" rim Im not sure but on the 18" rim I don't go over that based on many recommendations ready here on the forum and on other ones.

I will usually get them at 55-58 front, 60-62 rear.

Also the stock General tires are standard D rated tires not for more than 44PSI. Unless you have the XD and I still don't think they came with E rated tires. I would not run those tires over 65 Cold (it will drift up as the tire heats). There is risk for rim fracture. Yoda The extra ply sidewalls should still help with the "soft" tire when not airing up to max PSI. When I had mine installed they set them to 45psi out the gate and they were fine for DD. The E rated tire is more for confidence on a half-ton truck, when you get into 3/4 and 1ton you can really play with axle load and tire pressure to max even more due to the higher payload options.

              Just my pennies.

Ok, I have found some clarification that should help. There are two ratings on this tire in a 275/70R 18. One is SL and the other E1. The stock tires were the SL version which is where I got the 44 PSI max. If I'm not mistaken, the SL is an 8 ply tire. There is a version of the same size in the same name that is an E1 and that is what I had been looking at.

I now have a 10 ply E1 rated Cooper Discoverer ATP II. That is where the higher numbers are. They are at 60 PSI right now and it sounds as if I don't need to go any higher. Discount Tire where I bought them assured me the rims would handle the pressure fine or they wouldn't have put them on. Any advice on running the higher rate capacity tire?

No need. 1 Ton trucks are fitted with E1 rated tires and they don’t have issues. You will be more than fine. Are you in the XD Titan with the 5.6 or 5.0?

Thanks for the reply. No, it is a Pro4X. When I bought it I didn't realize how tow-ready the truck was since I didn't buy it for that purpose. It has proven to work well with the Transcend.

BillinTexas Yeah great trucks for sure. The XD is the heavy duty option from Nissan. Your truck would not have come with E rated. Only SL tires. And yes discount tire will put whatever tire you ask on but I would not get that tire over 65psi cold with that rim under load.

The XD also has a CCC/payload between 2000-2500# where as the standard maxes at 1600-1700 if my memory serves. I’m on my mobile so my brain is the google today.

I called DT and they assured me they would not have put them on that rim if it wasn't ok. He gave me the pitch they give about the right and wrong they will and will not do.It wouldn't have hurt my feelings for them to tell me it should be a different tire. I don't plan to run over 65 but needed them where they will travel to set up my new hitch. Thanks

                          Hi Bill,

My HDPP F150 came with OE 10 ply 80 psi LT tires. The label pressure specs are 55 front and 60 rear. Just a reference point . . .

Rob, thanks so much for that information. It is very helpful to me. While the Pro4X isn't branded HD, it has many HD attributes that I wasn't aware of until I bought our rig. One other question for you, do you tow at those label pressures?

Just FYI, and your local DT may be better than the one I dealt with...BUT....at the DT I purchased tires from installed E1 80psi tires on my rims that had "MAX 65 PSI" engraved on the backside of the wheel spokes.
I found out three years later during a tire rotation. It never actually caused a problem for me. But I bought new wheels.
