  • 2022 f350

We have moved to the dark side! Replacing the Ecoboost F150 HDPP after 43,000 towing kms. (27,000 towing miles)
The new TV is a 2022 F350 Lariat SRW Diesel CC SB.
It was time for a new truck and our travel plans will take us through country with much steeper grades than our annual trips back and forth from Canada to Florida.
The two truck are very similar in physical size (first picture) but I have not yet hitched the Reflection to the new truck to sort out towing level.
The (new for 2022) 12" center screen in the Superduty and all the cameras are simply amazing. They knit together to give an overview as if there was a drone hovering above. (second picture).
Payload is just over 3400 lbs. (An F250 version would have had barely more payload than the HDPP F150 . . . so, that was not an option.)

Ford payloads are complicated to figure out. The “close to what I wanted” comparison F250s that I looked at, were all well under 3000 lb payload.

Yup, I looked in Austin, Houston, San Antoni and Dallas to find mine.

Congrats! More awesome adventures, without struggling TV, ahead!

You certainly do need a decoder ring for their payloads. TBH, when shopping for my truck, 90% of my time was browsing dealer websites for units with the features I wanted, or for that matter didn't. When one fit the build, it was emailing the dealer asking for a picture of the payload sticker. The most frustrating part was the canned response of "it can tow 11k lbs!" with no pictures included.

Even crazier now . . . the dealer lots are empty because of the computer chip shortage limiting production. No “demos” to even look at. Most of what I learned was by looking at similar trucks in their service department. My plan was to buy an end of production 2021. None of those available so I ordered a 2022.

And . . . yes . . . our travel plans include crossing all the mountain ranges in North America (several times) .

All the Ford Order Guide info is focused on trailer weight . . . assuming a calculated % pin weight. Nothing useful for real world pin or tongue weights.

The chip shortage will be with us for the foreseeable future I suspect. I've even heard in some cases that there is over two years of backlog.

Anyways, enjoy the new truck! If you need any campground recommendations for Alberta, feel free to contact me. Although TBH, you can't go wrong with any of the camping available in our mountain parks!

This past summer we pulled our 21G up and down the Rockies with grades as steep as 14%. It was great to have a vehicle that pulled the trailer without issue. You will certainly enjoy it. The exhaust brake has been a tremendous feature in the mountains as well.

Congrats on the new wheels! Love mine. This was the first season towing the 303 and it was great.

                          Couple things I really like:
                          - bed camera - perfect for hitching up the fifth wheel. If you turn on the guidance lines, it will give you a centre line guide that you can line up directly with the fifth wheel pin - as with the other lines, it turns as you turn. And, then you can zoom in the view by hitting the "+" sign on the screen when you are close.
                          - Diesel exhaust brake (two modes, "On" or "Auto") - works really well when in Tow/Haul mode. We travelled most of this summer back and forth through the mountain passes (Kananaskis, Banff, Jasper, Icefields Parkway, Coquihalla (BC5), and BC Highway 3). Took some practice, but once I figured it out, most of the "reasonable" downhills were managed using only the Exhaust Brake. Sounds like some of these roads are in your future

One downside: - fuel economy or more specifically fuel range. This summer I was only getting about 500 km's on a tank (128L capacity) when pulling the 303, mostly in mountains (we are averaging about 18-19L/100kms). I am hopeful this will improve on some flatter roads.

And as others have offered - happy to provide any experience in this part of the world (Alberta/BC) if you have any questions (we are based in Calgary).

Congratulations, Rob and Cate ! In reading some other posts over the last few weeks, I wondered when you were going to share pictures and details. You know in our communications over the years that both you and I are partial to how good black looks. Nice to see this continue......good looking truck and ordered/equipped right with your knowledge and expertise. Share a picture of the window sticker here or PM or txt if you would. I am not planning on ordering a blue oval for our new truck as you know I'm a GM guy (right Jim Guest ) but ?

By the way, did you and Cate move ? Looks to be a different home.

18L/100km.....I wish for that. Pulling our trailer to Kananaskis and back, I average about 20-25L/100km. I know we were not comparing apples to apples, but still.
