    Hi Jim,

You have certainly jumped into these projects . . . but, from the chassis that the parts are sitting on, I expect that these upgrades are well within your wheelhouse. (I have to ask what that chassis is for?) I will be interested to learn more about your headlight replacement project. Any of my projects documented on the "other" forum are recorded here as well. If there are updates in the last couple of years, these will only exist here. If you have any questions on the EoH brakes, don't hesitate to ask.

      Hi Rob

The chassis is the pan of a 73 bug that I’m rebuilding, rebuilt the engine, took body off stripping down to paint, rewiring everything, also and here is where I make some enemies, I had a street baja in high school sooooo I’m making this into a street Baja with fat tires and stuff reliving my teenage years. The body had some damage anyway, so it needed body work.I hope to start the headlights in a couple days and will let you know how that works. The brakes probably next week and I appreciate the offer for help and want hesitate to ask.
      Thanks
      Jim

          Hi Jim,

I thought that was a VW of some sort, based on the pedals and the floor pan. Looks like a fun project! I similarly had some wanderings through VW stuff in my younger years . . . mostly with a Porsche 914 . . . which was essentially a mid-engined VW. Here we are . . . yet again . . . way off topic . . . somebody should talk to a moderator about that .

                • Notes from our first tow with the 2022 F350:

1350 miles (Canada to Florida . . . running ahead of the recent storms)

10.5 MPG average (less than I was expecting) Paid between $3.50 and $4.20 per gallon! More expensive than the premium gasoline that I used to need for the Ecoboost! Towing range was 350 miles on a full tank.

The trailer is slightly higher at the front than before, but this does not seem to affect towing (see picture)

Lost the trailer brakes for a while (loose terminal in the cord end) which proved that good trailer brakes are still really important even with the heavier truck. The truck diagnostics did not identify this . . . which surprises me.

A recurring problem is a “Trailer Disconnected” warning randomly after braking. The trailer brakes are still there (confirmed with hand apply). This may have to do with the low current draw of the LED brake lights that I have installed or the EoH trailer brake apply. LED marker lights and turn signals do not cause a problem . . . hmmm.

Trailer running lights come on when shifting from P to D (like the truck DRLs). I did not set this up and cannot find a screen to modify this. Not necessarily bad . . . just curious.

The diesel obviously has way more torque than the Ecoboost but overall, the F350 does not handle the trailer much differently than the HDPP F150. Diesel engine braking is really nice . . . although the turbocharged Ecoboost was capable of an amazingly similar function.

On an approaching grade, the F350 10 speed transmission selects a rather abrupt 10 to 8 downshift. .Dialing out 10th and running in 9th made this downshift a much smoother 9 to 8. At a cruising speed of 62 MPH this increased engine RPM from about 1400 to about 1500. Why 62 MPH you might ask ?. . . because this is exactly 100 km/hr which is the much easier to see midpoint on a Canadian speedometer.

                  • Good report. Looking at the pic it does not look that far out of level, looks pretty good to me. Now if you can get that trailer connection problem taken care of you will be all set.

I average about the same mileage when towing, I have seen 11.5 on the dash at times but it always seem to average to about 10.5. I use 10 when calculating driving distance at 30 gallons, even though my tank is 36 gallons, always good to have a little reserve.

Interesting feedback on the 10 speed shifting, I wonder if tow haul mode is different or the same.

                      Hi Brian,

Agreed that we usually plan 300 miles travel on a "range" of 350. The 10-8 harsh downshift was in tow/haul mode. Perhaps normal mode might have softened this as well? I always dialled out top gear of the 6 speed transmission with the Ecoboost as well . . . but, this was more about getting cruising RPM into the boosted torque band.

I am pleased with my decision to keep the manual slider hitch. The tailgate to trailer space is considerably less than with the previous truck.

                      • Rob, diesel fuel and gasoline where much cheaper two years ago during your last trip where that one ton should be better in a heavy cross wind with extra TV mass. Premium fuel today would be close to $4.00/gal. Sad or mad but certainly not glad.
I'm planning on a light duty diesel in the spring if they are available and am excited to see how it drags the Imagine around. To keep the fuel economy up you may be able to run 10th in Tap and when you feel a downshift will be coming up, just tap to 9 and then to 8.

These modern diesels use a throttle valve to achieve a delta P across the engine to allow cooled EGR to operate. In 10th gear you will be more unthrottled and should pick up some economy even though its just 100 RPM less. A vacuum to allow EGR to operate reduces N0x but creates additional losses to create this pressure differential.

                        • Rob,

I do not use tow haul mode in my Chevy and it cruises just fine, it will down shift but not very often unless in the hills, I only have the 6 speed though. If you have the manual shift mode you could set it in gear 8 or 9 and leave it there, a friend has a 2013 Ford and he uses that when towing.

                          • Cate&Rob I am a bit surprised that there is not a setting in the system that lets you change from MPH to KPH. The running lights thing may be something new since a lot of trailers use the running lights to charge the e-brake battery.

The harsh shift thing is also a bit strange. I know newer transmissions "learn" the load and shift accordingly. HOWEVER this does mean that the transmission needs to undergo many cycles to learn (you probably already know this). You might want to check and see if there is a transmission reprogram that needs to be performed. Not all dealers apply all updates (not all mfg even notify owners) upon delivery or during maintenance services.

                              Hi Joseph,

The digital displays can certainly be switched from metric to imperial, but if using the centre of the display for other functions, it is handy to keep an easy speed reference on the "old style" speedometer. The MPH numbers are there below the KPH numbers . . . they are just more difficult to read. (The reverse of a US speedometer where MPH is larger than KPH). See first picture in post 143.

A couple more....your fuel economy will continue to increase until about 10K miles where your still breaking in. Also Cetane is lower in winter diesel if you were traveling with winter fuel.
