  • Weigh Safe Towing App - Review

Weigh Safe released a new app on 10/21/2021,
    The description is:
"For all of your towing needs, the Weigh Safe App is an informational tool designed to help people know what their ratings are for their entire towing system, including truck, hitch, and trailer.
Knowing your limits of your towing application helps you to not exceed any of your ratings and therefore have a much safe and smoother towing experience."

So the app is NOT for Weigh Safe hitches exclusively. You can run it in a manual mode, and hand enter all the measurements, and it will give you a calculation.

    Setup

It starts off by asking for you to define your Truck, and it allows you to search by VIN.
My truck, a 2012 Toyota Tundra, VIN filled all the fields out, except for the Max Gross Trailer Weight (weight carrying). So I had to pull my manual out to get that number.

Next it asks you to detail your hitch. Blue Ox Sway Pro. Again, some of the numbers are printed on the hitch, other I had to google. (Max Gross Trailer Weight, Max Tongue weight)

Finally, it asks you to define your camper. This consisted of reading off the label on the side of the camper, and then weighing the tongue. (Weighing the tongue of course being the most difficult of ALL the measurements so far.

Then it asks you to add your cargo amounts. Since I didn't know, I guessed, and tried to aim HIGH.

Then, based exclusively on the numbers that have been entered, it tells you GO / NO GO if you are within the parameters of your setup.

    Checklist
It also provides a safe tow check list for when you hookup, that you can then check each item of, as well as a note scratch pad.

    Conclusion
I've used many hand calculations, and many excel based calculators in the last two years. This beat them hands down. They've all come to the same answer, but this one was the quickest, and I wasn't guessing on what number when where.

It has *Correctly* identified that my tongue weight is almost too low. I only found this out a few weeks ago when I finally (after 2 years) got to a CAT SCALE.

Does this replace the need of a CAT scale? No. You still need that to determine if you have you weight distribution hitch setup correctly. This does not replace that. HOWEVER, I believe if you have a weigh safe hitch, it can make that calculation for you.

It's worth the 10 minutes I spent messing around with it. And remember, it's only going to be as accurate as the numbers you put into it.

This is interesting. Regarding tongue weight. I understand the sway consequences of having a tongue weight that is too light. But I'm stymied on how they set your max tongue weight at 971 pounds. I wonder what the limiting factor is? Hitch, GAWR, etc?

6470 lbs ( Estimated Gross Trailer Weight, on the bottom of the trailer) * .15 = 970.5 (15% of the trailer weight)

I think I understand that Mike. My question is related to why are they limiting to 15%? What happens if an owner hits 16% or higher that makes it out of tolerance?

The text above the picture turns red, and says "Improper Weight Distribution Setup", and gives a thumbs down. About the same as using any other calculator you can find on the Internet.
