Interesting???? Thanks for the tip - Emma my GSD might not appreciate the noise

Looks like I have a lot of reading to do - I might want to find a 2020 manual online and read up. before it get here so I can ask intelligent questions.

    Thanks

As for DEF, while under warranty I bought my def from the dealer just to ensure no waranty issues.
IMO, Just buy mainstream reputable stuff and avoid the cheap 'no name' stuff. I have bought at truck stops from the pump. About half the price of 'by the jug'. I figure they go through a lot so age would not be an issue.

But if you want to do the deep dive down a rabbit hole...youtube has lots of videos about DEF

I bought a refractometer to test off-the-shelf DEF before adding it to my truck. The tool stays under the back seat so it's always with the truck. It's very easy to use. Only time I don't use it is when adding DEF at a truck stop (via their pump).

So far the Walmart DEF ("cheap stuff") has passed every measurement test.

        Tool link is here: https://www.amazon.com/Refractometer.../dp/B07DLDZBS8

If my memory is correct this tool (or something like it) was recommended by Cate&Rob. I'd never heard of it before Rob's input.

I have been using the Walmart DEF for over six years without any issues. As long as the brand meets the API standard, you are good. When I am towing, I usually use the truck lanes, and get DEF from the pump, just make double sure you are filling the correct inlet. Biggest thing is being fresh, and you can't go wrong at a truck stop on that.

howson , do you do a calibration on that tool every so often?

Gotta admit, the $25 price makes me wonder how accurate it is? But I like the idea. Will research and look into purchasing. Thanks for posting.

Yoda Keith, I've been using the bulk handle at truck stops since my first DEF truck back in 17. Only bought jugs 1 time (this past year while traveling).

Best advice on DEF is either bulk (there is a pretty tight standard on the stuff), or when buying in jugs pay attention to the jug. A sealed container of DEF should have a very long shelf life by the way they are sealed.

Also when using truck stops, be advised if you use the truck pumps for fuel, not all of them take personal credit cards at the pump (quite frustrating) unless it's "registered" with the company. Also Fuel at the truck pumps is typically more expensive (who knows why) vs the pumps out front.

DEF usage definitely went up while towing. I think I made 2300 miles with a full tank before it got down to the first warning in my 18 GMC (thats about 5 gallons).

Before each use per the instructions with distilled water (see attached) and pic below (pic is what's in my truck).

Considering the cost of a damaged DEF system in the truck, the minute or so it takes to test the stuff is worth it (to me).

                  Thanks Howard and everyone.
I have added this to the wish list for Christmas. From the you tube vids it looks straight forward in use.
BTW - do you worry about the DEF freezing? Is there an additive like for diesel fuel.?

So much to read up and learn

Yoda Keith, IIRC DEF tanks have heaters. This has been a known issue in the tanks that the heater and quality meters go out.

Also, DEF has a freezing point of about 11F.

I have had def trucks here in South West Colorado for 15 years and have not problems with the def. And they live outside. There is a tank heater. When you shut off the engine a pump pulls the def back into the tank, so no worries about the plumbing.

Your tank will have a 7.5 gal. capacity. Each box of def is 2.5 gal.

I had forgotten we are neighbors as I am in Durango. Good to know no issues here.

BTW if I get the box DEF, do I need a special funnel to get it in the tank?

A funnel is included with the box. It's a stretchable, flexible accordion folded funnel in a bag on top of the bottle of def inside the box.

"Refraction" has no calibration. It is a scale measure of light through a liquid. There is usually a "calibration" line where you can use distilled water, but this is usually to make sure there is no contamination on the sample glass. The same (or similar) tool has been used for years to measure antifreeze, battery acid, etc. As long as the sight glass is rinsed after each use it should be ready for the next test. I have used one of these for years to measure antifreeze protection when winterizing boats.

Our machine shop used a refractometer to test cutting fluid quality.
