  • Diesel Efficient fuel at some gas stations

I recently fueled up at a Mobil station that carries a Diesel Efficient fuel. The pump did not have the typical Ultra-Low Sulphur sticker.

Kind of late to ask, but is this just a marketing tool? If I continue to buy from the Mobil station will I be able to tow the Solitude no problem? I should note that the Diesel Efficient was quite a bit cheaper than typical diesel everywhere else.

I believe that fuel (i.e. that sticker) is intended mainly for agricultural equipment (i.e. Non-Highway) and it is likely dyed Red. Cheaper because not taxed the same way giving a break to the ag industry. Risk is probably a pretty hefty fine if found using it (for other than off-highway purposes), but I don't think it will harm anything in your vehicle. Kind of like "purple gas" for gasoline engines.

Synergy Diesel Efficient (I think) is a trademark name from Exxon (i.e. Mobil, Esso). According to them (Exxon) it has some proprietary additives to improve performance. Could be science or gimmick, like any "differentiated" fuel. Not sure why it would be cheaper though.

That sticker is on untaxed pumps and contains dyed fuel. If you get caught running it in a road vehicle, the fines are as much as $1000 a gallon. The dye is strong enough it can be detected in later tanks. They’ll do spot checks at places with a lot of farmers like ag shows where they’ll just shut down the exit and sample every diesel vehicle leaving. They always catch a bunch.

If you did use the dyed fuel I hope your servicing dealer is kind to you. It will show up on your fuel filter for a long long time to come and is very hard to flush out. As for fines, Depends on the state. I believe California requires reporting by dealers. On my 04 I once used a can that had dyed fuel fin it or my tractor that had maybe a couple of residual tablespoons. I had filed it with taxed fuel and taken it on my trip and used it. That small amount of dye showed up on the filter and the dealer asked a lot of questions. They wrote it up as an emergency fuel fill which kept me out of hot water. I bought and keep my trip cans separate from the tractor fuel cans now.

        Good luck

The sticker simply means its acceptable for use in diesel engines other than on the road. It isnt an indication of off road fuel although I will say its misleading.
The "diesel efficient" is just a marketing name.
True "off road" red dye fuel is typically well marked to avoid mistakes.
In Michigan there is a disparate price for diesel on the interstates and US highways vs locally. On I-75 last week diesel was well over $5.50 at the Flying J, Loves and the pilot but available in town for just over $5.

I wonder if it has a bio component in it as well.

Since the sticker says it’s a violation of federal law to use it in a Highway vehicle, I’d say that is well marked.

And since its a federal law, this can make prosecution painful. In more than one way.

Pull a sample from your truck - possibly from the water separator if it has a valve. If it shows red you have an issue. Or go back to the pump and use a towel to wipe the inside of the nozzle or ask the station manager. My guess is will be red tinted too. Any non-road or un-taxed fuel I have ever come across in the last 30 years, has always been red dyed. Some are clearly labeled red dye and others like you ran across are not.

If you can, please report back what you find.

BTW it helps us if you have your signature completed with what truck and trailer you have and where your from (state).

All of the Mobil diesel I have seen in Michigan has the "diesel efficient" name. Not sure how I missed the "off road" ? Duh.

So does anyone have experience towing after filling up with the Mobil/Exxon Diesel Efficient fuel? Again, my concern is that the pump does not display the typical Ultra Low Sulphur Less Than 15 ppm sticker you see everywhere else.

I do believe some on here have hijacked the original question and have erroneously believed TNF Solitude purchased off road diesel. I believe he didn't, It's true off road is a big no no, not what the Mobil/Exxon product is. I would doubt it is revolutionary in any way, probably an additive added hopefully when fuel is dumped into the station storage tank.

What year truck and engine do you have? That can make a huge radiance. Good news is just about all diesel is Ultra Low Sulfur Less Than 15 ppm per current federal regulation. I have used in the past for my 04 6.0 a Power Service product in the sliver bottle. https://powerservice.com/psp_product...-cetane-boost/. However depending on what you drive I suggest talking with your dealer befor using anything. You may just be fine.

It saved my hiney once. My 6.0 was only rated for a max of 5% bio-diesel. ON one of my trips I mistakenly fill my near empty tank with 20% bio-diesel. The truck ran rough a few miles down the road towing . I added the Power Service and the issue cleared up a few miles later.. The other product they have 911 is a must if you travel from the south to the north in winter and have a jelling issue.

Did you ever determine if the fuel you got was dyed red?

I would say that you still have ultra low sulpher diesel. Even off road diesel was lowered to the 15ppm around 2010, I believe. Some vintage equipment has to have additives to run on the modern diesel.

If you see something that is priced much lower than everyone else and it seems too good to be true. It usually is.
