  • 1,000 break in befor towing. What does it do? How much less is OK?

Not much came up om searching this topic soo....

Ford manual says I should have 1000 miles on the truck before towing, but they don't elaborate? I believe GM and Ram have similar requirements. I am assuming it is to seat the ring and pinion gears, breaks, bearings, and possibly something in the trans. Does anyone have any factual information on this and if less is OK?

I will be asking the service managed during the PDI if the truck ever gets here.

    Trying to learn

    Thanks
    Keith

Keith, you are correct in the wear in of the ring and pinion. As for the transmission, it's about the number of shifts. Back when I had my Allison rebuilt, my builder told me to drive it 3000 miles (he was assuming city type driving not cross country) then do a filter and oil change. This allowed the frictions and steels to wear in a bit providing maximum power holding ability.

I remember a while back the truck manuals actually said 5,000 miles.

My Ram manual says 800km or 500 miles. It also states that the Cummins is made to tow right from new. I have been told on my Ram it is only to seat the axle gears. Mine also states for first 800 km not to tow above 80kph or 50 mph.

I'd follow the manufacturer's recommendation. That's an expensive machine to screw up. Manufacturing tolerances and finish have come a long way in reducing breaking time, but parts still need to bed in to mate well.

Yoda Given how long you have kept your current truck I would get the 1,000 miles in. If you were the type to trade out at 100-150,000 miles I would be less worried about it, but if you are hoping for a lifespan similar to your 2004 I think it would be more important. I had a similar issue with mine, we got it just a week before I was heading out to Florida with it. On top of that I had a crazy week and could not get all of the "extra driving" in I was hoping for. I got 5-600 miles in, and often think about it. I have not noticed any issues, but I am getting ready to change out my differentials and transfer case fluids so we will see. I am at about 60k, but usually only keep mine for 100k or so. That said given whats going on with trucks I have been leaning to keeping this one longer so we will see.

Yes, drive it around. Vary the rpm. Go for milk the first day, then go for eggs the second day...etc.... run down the hwy on the 3rd day......

Now this is strange. I want back through the manual and could not find the 1000 mile brake in, just a statement under towing to not exceed 70 MPH for the first 500 miles. Maybe I was seeing things.

I know I have a 2021 F350 but I looked in the index for break-in and it was on page 323 middle of page second paragraph, now maybe since yours is newer it doesn’t matter, just thought I’d pass it along. Having positive thoughts that the the truck shows up soon.

When I picked up my truck in August 2020, I searched several websites. One automotive engineer said that the engines are fine, but the rear axle benefits from the 1,000 miles to season the differential and axle.

The rear differential is the only thing to be concerned with, they just want the gears run in a little before placing a huge load on it. My truck came only a month before our first trip with the new fifth wheel so I was only able to get 400 miles or so on it before we left. I serviced the rear diff at 4k miles and everything looked perfect, the gear mesh was spot on.

I tend to be in the camp of not worrying about break ins too much. Having grown up around auto and truck plants and seeing the way the vehicles are handled during shipping and at the dealer before delivery I highly doubt anything I do to it will equal that abuse.
