  • BedRug Impact Bed Mat install

Moderators I put this here as I will be cutting out the pucks and installing the hitch over it, Not sure if anyone here has don it or not. Please move if there is a better location.

First improvement to the truck to save my knees. I had the traditional full BedRug in my 04, and while I liked it, it stained badly and soaked up oil. so I went this time with just the Impact Bed Mat. It 's impervious. So I thought I would document the install, including cutting it to fit around the pucks. There is not much information on this.

Step one is to install the tailgate weather striping to seal it up. Ford has really changed how the bed is put together from 04, so this was a challenge. I did find a location that would make contact, except for the very top. There are numerous kits for this, I got a free kit when I bought the Retrax Cover.

This concludes step one - no cuts, banged head, or bruised knees and no scratches

You folks were kind enough to make me get the above tool kit for trim work. It worked great to get the puck trim rings off without scratching the truck.

Now if you look close in the picture at the bed/wall seam above the tool kit. I can see light through this seam, so I am sure there can be dust and water intrusion. I was thinking of sealing it with silicone. Thoughts?

then to get the mat out of the box and in the truck. It was rolled inside out so a bit of a pain to unroll.

ID:	86263 Well it's in and unrolled. I stopped at this point so it could heat up and settle in place. Its a pretty good fit. Ill give it a day, make the adjustments and start the puck trimming before sticking it in place. If I am going to seal the bed seams I will need to do that first too.

You might want to leave the seam open to help drain the bed.

        Today I finished up.

I waited for the mat to be nice and warm - almost too hot and used a thin box razor knife to trim the holes. At first I just trimed to just outside the puck and layer widen the hole another 1/4 inch all around to better fit the trim ring back. I also beveled around the hole about 1.5 inch back from the hole edge on the back foam. This allowed the mat to compress more for the trim ring to fit.

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_0806s.jpg Views:	0 Size:	178.2 KB ID:	86352 Once I had the holes in place and back trimming done, I completed the installation of the mat per Bed Rug instructions - very straight forward.

Then the fun began - getting the trim rings back into position. I found if you inverted the plastic portion and got it started you could work your way around. Its not easy, but doable. Once in place the bed mat relaxed and compressed a bit under the trim ring pressure.

Click image for larger version Name:	IMG_0807s.jpg Views:	0 Size:	91.5 KB ID:	86353 I think it came out OK. The wrinkles and creases will disappear in a day or so as the mat relaxes into position.

I then installed the box link tie downs. Two slipped in pretty easily - the other two needed some persuasion and a bit of fine trimming on the locking T. I think I am going to like them. For those that don't know what they are here is a Ford link. https://www.ford.com/support/how-tos...at-is-boxlink/

So first project is done, Tomorrow I will be setting up the B&W hitch - first stab at setting the height ----------- and I get to use my hydraulic lift table

On edit. I got to thinking if I had to do the over I would get the impact bed mat with the bed rug sides that are all sown together. however trimming the sides for all the cut outs would have been a pain - thus why I just got the mat. I have some large gaps along the mat edge that will eventually fill up with dirt, etc. I have some Black foam sealant left over, I might do a test section and see if it will work. The black silicone that GD uses now would probably be better, but I cant find a source for it.
        Thoughts?

I thought I would update this thread to include that the bed mat did not interfere in any way for the B&W 25K OEM Companion hitch install.that used the factory puck system.

My bed came with the spray-in liner like the Line-X. No gaps, no interference.

Ted I considered that, but folks said it was slick and hard on the knees. The bed mat was cheaper and it appears it will do well. Time will tell. I think the puckering is from me sealing the edges with black silicone, not allowing it to move.
