  • 5th Wheel Hitch Recommendations

    Hello All,

We just upgraded from an Imagine to a Solitude and in preparation I had a Curt double lock under bed gooseneck installed and bought the Anderson Ultimate 5th wheel adapter hitch. I spent many hours researching and that seemed to be a great alternative to the typical king pin receiver hitch but it took my wife 5 minutes of research to find that Anderson has had some failures causing the trailer to end up in the back seat of the truck. We have driven about 200 miles with this one and are looking at moving into a standard slide hitch and wondering if anyone has and recommendations. I like the B & W 18k slide hitch just trying to find out if the companion will hook up to my Curt double lock gooseneck receiver. I am driving a leveled up 2500HD Diesel and run air bags to re-level once the weight is on the back. Is it normal for the trailer to kind of jerk you back and forth when not breaking or accelerating? New to the 5th wheel towing so trying to figure it out. Let me know if you have any advice. Thanks

I think the B&W Companion that you are looking at requires the B&W turnover ball gooseneck and will not work with a standard gooseneck like the Curt. I have the none slider version of the companion and I had to put in the turnover ball gooseneck under the truck to use it. The turnover ball is a square hole that the companion fits into. I really like it so far. We also get some "chucking but very minor but our Solitude 378MBS has the Morryde rubber pin box that helps with this.

As for the Andersen issues that are on the internet there could be other circumstances that caused them so be careful about believing everything you see on this. There are lots of people out there using Andersen that love it and have never had an issue. That Companion slider will add a lot of weight to your truck too and payload may be an issue.

If you do not need the slider, a good option for your Curt ball would be a Goosebox. I switched from the Andersen to that and have been very happy. Fully supported by Lippert as well if thats one of your concerns, and when you unhook nothing in the truck except the ball.

No, LisanJim , it is not good for the trailer to jerk back and forth when not braking or accelerating. There will be some play in the hitch, it isn't a machined fit after all, but if there is noticeable movement during travel then something is not right. What that something is I have no idea.
