  • What spare filters do you carry for your TV...and anything else?

I need to add a few more miles to HAL. Was going to drop by the Ford dealer in Farmington (add another 100 to 150 miles if I can) and ask for a quick check. Question - for my long trip I was going to get a spare fuel filter and oil filter. Should I get a jug of DEF? What about anything else that I might not know. I think I have the trailer covered.. Tomorrow I start the fridge on 120V and prime the propane (both tanks filled and need to check connections for leaks) and then sanitize the fresh water system. Departure Thursday or Friday if everything goes as planed. Fingers crossed. I have no set schedule - going to take my time and enjoy this trip. If I see something I will stop for a change. My last trip with the 04 was a trip to Georgia was a trip from Heckif you remember.

    Thanks in advance
    Keith

PS - I was also going to ask about adding a sway bar - for the future. It's not an option of the new truck had 20" wheels for some reason. Ran across several threads with part numbers and I thought I would verify what actually works (part numbers) and what adding it might change. If folks are interested I will post what I find out.

I carry a spare fuel filter, as they are hard to get, but not an oil filter. The oil filters are not hard to get, and I don't do the changes myself anymore, these diesels have a lot of oil in them. If the truck is getting close to needing an oil change, I just do it before the trip. Getting the correct oil for my truck (5-40W) isn't that easy right now. Fuel filters I do myself still, because they want to charge an unbelievable amount for something that is simple to do.

DEF, if I am on a trip, I use the commercial lanes and just get it off the pumps, otherwise, pretty much any Walmart, auto parts store, truck stop, tractor supply, has it. No special brand needed, they are all the same if they meet the specs. Snake oil for the ones that want to charge more for the "premium" version. I have been using the Walmart brand since 2015 without any issues. The biggest thing on DEF is you want to try and use the freshest, depending on who you listen to, it has a 6 month to 1 year shelf life.

Seeing as you are talking Alaska....If it were me I'd bring a jug of DEF (swap it in occasionally during your trip) and fuel filter. If your Ford is the same as my Dodge, water separator as well. A litre or two of trans fluid in case you develop a leak and a funnel that will allow you to add the fluid. I wouldn't worry about the oil filter unless you are bringing everything to do your own oil change?

As for sway bars, my 440 Challenger has a 1-1/4" bar in front - 3600# car. With the spring rates of a one ton truck and the trucks weight 7300#+, you would need a tree trunk sized bar to do some meaningful work I believe.

I agree on the DEF and the fuel filter but I would bring 2 fuel filters. I might bring an oil filter in case the one on it gets damaged by road debris or something crazy like that.

Just a note that I recently got hold of some bad DEF, low specific gravity. Cost $500 and a week in the shop to get DEF system and tank drained and cleaned and refilled. I recalled that there is a past thread here somewhere on the consistency and purity of different brands of DEF and that Blue DEF was the top rated. Since then and going forward Blue DEF is all I use.

I keep 12 boxes of the Blue Def in a cool place in my garage. 6 go with me in Nov on the 2200 mile trek to TX for the winter. 6 await me when I get home, and I rotate the stock.
That's about all I carry for the truck (2021 F350 DRW Lariat) on the road except the usual safety triangles, safety LED flashing lights.

Just to update I picked up the fuel filter set, a spare oil filter and an air filter. I got the air filter in the off chance I go bookbinding down a gravel road somewhere. Ill get DEF on the road if needed.

I carry and use a DEF refractometer before ever putting DEF from any source in my truck. It runs about $103 US, but gives an extremely accurate specific gravity reading before placing it in the tank. They are small enough to carry easily, and super simple and quick to use.

The contents of every jug gets tested with a refractometer before it goes in the truck for the exact reason stated in your post. Only exception is when DEF is added from a truck stop--which is rare. Search for UREA DEF REFRACTOMETER on Amazon--lots of options for <$30.

Yoda (Keith) -- the fuel filters on my '17 are not "easy" to change. I assume your new one is similar. Even Ford mechanics get doused in diesel when changing them. Having the filters on hand may not be a bad idea, but changing them yourself on the road? Watch some YouTube videos on the process before thinking that's going to be easy.

The only issue I've had on the road is needing an oil change, even though I started out fresh. As my service advisor back home told me, "the truck works hard towing up and down those mountains so it should not be a surprise an oil change is needed earlier than normal". For the record it was <5,000 miles. YMMV but you might want to plan a "service day" and target a location that has a reputable Ford dealership to get the work done.

I always bring a fuel filter, engine air filter and cabin filter on trips. Most Ford dealers I use along the trip routes to get an oil change at, charge me one hour labor or less to change out and install the fuel filter. Last year a few shops were running low on them and told me it was a good thing I had my own. When out west last summer exploring a lot of dusty gravel roads, went through 2 air filters on that trip and one cabin filter. Usually get my oil changed at 5k miles on trips and new fuel filter every 10k miles at second oil change. I am just paranoid with the CP4 failures on these diesels that I read about. Bad fuel or water in fuel and it’s over.

I also bring extra water filters (the blue exterior ones) keep out sediment mostly. I use a Berkey system for my drinking water.

Hmmmm.Mopar filters are easy to change without getting any oil on you, they have a pet**** and drain hose on the filter housing. Now the oil filter on the other hand...

To each their own, but I consider 5k mile oil changes a bit excessive. Wont hurt for sure, but what does Ford recommend? Cummins recommends 15k miles.

edit...The valve I was attempting to describe that got sensored is similar to a radiator drain valve
