  • Noises Connecting and Disconnecting 5th wheel - Normal or not?

Since this is my first fifth wheel I need to ask how much frame noise and wall creaking does your fifth wheel make when using the landing gear to either lift the weight off of the truck or put the weight back on? Mine creaks and groans horribly and I don't recall it making any noise when I first picked it up from the dealer. Even my daughter asked me the other day if it is supposed to make all that noise when we took the weight off of the truck at our last stop from vacation.

I have has at least 5 screws coming up through the upper bedroom floor and hallway. Originally the floor had no creaks but now has lots of creaks and after 4000+ km of towing it flexes when you walk on it. I am really concerned that the noise when hitching and unhitching is not normal and there is something else wrong here that is also causing the floor issues.

Pretty much no noise from my TTs except for the occasional suspension sounds that I still get with the new 378MBS.

    Thanks,

    Hi Rob,

This doesn’t sound right. I did discover how much flex there is in the front of the 5th wheel when I began using a pin tripod. This flex is usually masked by the suspension of the truck when hitching or unhitching. But, this flex is not accompanied by any significant amount of noise. I think there is something going on with the forward part of your trailer frame.

Thanks Rob. That is what I am afraid of but thought I should ask first on here with people much more experienced with 5th wheels than I am. Something just didn't seem right to me. Guess I will add this to the list of issues that just seems to keep on growing.

As for the screws coming through the flooring, I had a similar experience (fortunately, just one screw) where the installer had missed the wood filler in the c-channel when securing the decking, but had got close enough to the c-channel that the screw rubbed on it. Horrible squeak. I was able to locate the screw and pull it through the decking from the bottom, no hole in the linoleum.

If your 5 screws are randomly located, you may be able to fix the problem the same way I did. If the screws are in a line, this could mean that a row of screws missed the wood decking and you may need to consider securing the decking from below with some angle brackets and short screws. Worse case would be to open up the flooring to access from above and then have to patch the flooring.

          Thanks John,

I had a look in the basement and no screw threads showing for me to be able to pull them through. I was hoping. One of the screws is at least a 1/2' up at last check. The others you can feel through the floor as humps. Dealer has the warranty W/O in place. Just waiting for an appointment now.
