  • First tow with 2022 F350 - no time for test tow headed NORTH

OK I am probably nuts. We plan to leave about 10AM. I have initially set the truck to 5th wheel medium break with gain at 6. I wanted to do a test tow today but time and heat got the best of me. So I am going to dial it in on the road. I hope to get between Green River and Salt Lake on US 191/66 , but have no timeline or scheduled / reservations. This is a buy the seat of the pants adventure. I have not set up the advance tow assist or anything - time for that later - maybe on the trip on a lazy day.

Do You you folks have any tips on the initial adjustments. I am used to my old Voyager if that helps. If I have problems I can turn and head to the dealer, but sure hope I don't need to do that..In my testing of everything (DC-DC, etc) I got a positive indication of trailer connected.

    Thanks for the help

    Hi Keith,

Medium trailer braking with gain at 6 is also where I would start. That is where I ran on the trips to and from Florida (with the sometime there and sometimes not, pre recall trailer braking system). The advance tow assist is a trailer backing thing . . . I have yet to figure out if that is a benefit or not. You will have different “down the side” camera angles when hooked to the trailer. These come into play only when backing and take some getting used to but are useful.

Just take it easy and have fun! This is what the whole “RV thing” is all about.

      Thanks Rob

BTW I plan to post the trip over at the........well you know the place Right now I am so beat up - packing is not fun. I will probably make a short day of it and just stop at Green River for the night. I had fun today inputting stuff into ArriveCAN - a bit confusing, but I think I got it done. Had to put in a dummy arrival date, but it appears to allow you to update it with out loosing everything.

      Tomorrow the adventure begins

Yoda -- have fun! Expect some things to not go as desired...all part of the adventure. My .02 is don't worry about the backup assist. Some things "old dogs" just want to do the 'ol fashioned way (look over the shoulder and use the mirrors with a spotter).

If I can convey a single thought it's this: listen to that "inner voice". If something is telling you something's not right, STOP and GOAL ("Get Out and Look"). Saved me at least twice on this trip.

Also--will you please send me a PM link to your trip writeup? Thanks!

Yoda Safe travels, I'll second what Howard said, things will go wrong, they'll get fixed. Those are some of the best memories. PM me a link to your report as well. I'd love to follow along.

Make sure you go all the way to the end with arrivecan and end up with a receipt. If click/tap 'save and exit' you are NOT done. Once you have uploaded your ID and vax status, it should hold onto that info and you don't have to upload again.

Safe travels Yoda! Looking forward to your trip thread. Going north through Alberta I recommend the IceFields parkway. It's got some inclines though.

x2 on Scott’s advice on following the ArriveCan steps until you get a “receipt”.
Don't worry about the inclines . . . That’s what the thousand ft-lbs of engine torque are for .

When I got to the border they did not want it But the nice lady sure knew a lot about me and asked if I brought any guns with me. They must be tie into the states data base as I have a ccw permit from Colorado.

Were at TOK now deciding which way to go - Road from Whitehorse was extremely rough from Hains Jct. Truck running well. 9.5 to 11.5 towing likes 65 MPH Still learning the new noises and rumbling sounds under power. Only concern is I am going through a tank of DEF every 2000 kilometers. Had trouble finding it when warning came on. Now carrying at least 2 jugs.

The only miss adventure is I had one side cargo door open even though fully locked. Lost the black chucks for my leveling blocks and a full case of hardware screws and my electrical crimp connections collection. I am guessing it shifted enough to bow the door and pop it open. My bad for putting it there. We also had a kitchen disaster on hwy 43 east of Edmonton. DW had put a box of condiments in an upper cupboard that bounced out. A glass bottle of soy and a glass bottle of olive oil brook and sprayed everywhere. So far trailer is doing well. The sumo springs are excellent - especially on the rough roads.

I don't get WIFI very often and the is the first quiet moment I have had in a while.

Yes, when towing you go through DEF quick, particularly when climbing mountains. On long trips I always carry an extra 5 gallons of DEF.

I have my gain set to 5.5 which works well with my setup. I did have it at 7.5 which helped create a flatspot on my tires during an unplanned stop as a car pulled in front of me.

60/65 seems to be a sweet pot for me as well. I get 9.5 to 10.5 mpg. With a tail wind I've gotten 12. I typically go 70 which results in 8.5 to 9.5 mpg. A 20 mph headwind will result in 6.5 mpg.

We don't know each other so much but would LOVE to follow your trip as well.

We are sitting in Valdez for a couple of days - cant see much due to fog and rain but from what I could see WOW. Plan to start the post at the ....well... cant say but you know where tomorrow.

I hit 12 mpg today getting here at 55-60 and I have seen 9 mpg at 75. Diesel is right at $6 a gallon - paid up to $9 in Canada just before the Alaska border. I now have 7.5 gallon of DEF jugs in the truck bed. I have found in some areas it is very hard to find, so I agree carry at least 5 gallons with you. Since Montana I have found zero stations set up with DEF at the pump, even the truck lanes all through Canada. Most DEF is off brand to me ( no Blue DEF here), but I have been checking it and making sure seal is not broken before buying. What I have been using says certified and tested. Most Walmart's in Canada do not carry it. Canadian tire stores do. Thanks Rob for that hint @Cate&Rob
