  • Tow Vehicle Tires

Just bought a new tow vehicle last month. Chevy 2500hd. Put 282 miles on it and noticed a bubble in the left rear tire. The factory install tires are Goodyear Wrangler Trailrunner AT. After I bought the truck took it to Discount Tire and bought the warranty and road hazard on the tires. Going to either get just that one tire replaced or get ride of the Goodyears (no confidence in the other 3) or replace all four tires with Michelins. What are y’all’s opinions and recommendations on tow vehicle tires?

I've seen plenty of complaints about the Trailrunner ATs online having sidewall bulging issues. It's difficult to tell how rampant the issues are because some people see slight "waviness" (for lack of a better term) in the sidewalls and think they have a bulge when really that is a common byproduct of how the Trailrunners are designed, with overlapping material instead of a single piece sidewall. Unfortunately yours is definitely a bulge and pretty bad, absolutely should replace that one(and maybe the set).

I have Trailrunner ATs on my 3500 with about 12k miles and no issues yet, but because of what I've read I am watching them very closely. I'm happy with mine so far, except for the road noise but that's expected with an off road tire. If you decide to go with replacing all of them I've heard great things about General Grabbers for off-road tires and Michelin Crossclimates for more of an all season road tire. I don't know anyone personally with those on their truck but it's what I've seen people post about online. Good luck and let us know how you solve your issue (and impressions of new tires if you ditch the Trailrunners).

I just went through an interesting time replacing the tires on my truck. I put on Cooper Discover AT/3 tires, and over 10K miles, just could not keep them in balance. The tire store (Discount Tire) tried best they could over that time, and just bought them back with no mileage penalty. I put on some Faulkens, and so far, so good. I was talking to them about the Wrangler tires as I use to run them on my Jeep years ago. All the sales guys said to stay away from them, the quality is just not there anymore.

Wileykid Yeah I used to run the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor E rated, they were an awesome AT tire, but they changed it several years ago and it's supposedly not the tire it was. My current truck has the Michelin AT2 from the factory and they've been great. I'm just over 60k and I'd think I'll replace them with the same.

I should add, although I like the Faulkens, the sidewalls on them are definitely softer than the Coopers, or the Bridgestones that came with the truck. You can feel them give a little on turns with the trailer.

Called the dealer first. They were very concerned and offered to replace all the tires with another set of Goodyears. I’ve bought several trucks from the same salesman over the last 25 years. I had already bought the warranty through Discount just because they are everywhere. So when I went to Discount they told me they have seen several of these problems with the Trailrunner in the 20 inch tires. They inspected the other tires and found one of the front tires with a bubble just appearing. Long story short since the tires only had 280 miles on them Discount gave me full retail credit for the Goodyears and sold me Michelin LTX’s for 30 bucks a tire, and transferred the warranty from the Goodyears to the Michelins at no charge. All I could say was Wow! And he also said that if a Discount Tire customer has bought their warranty and has to have one of those warrantied tires repaired or replaced after hours or where there is not a Discount location, to take the receipt to the nearest Discount location during regular business hours and Discount will reimburse you for the replacement and or repair. Just glad we found this in the driveway and not 1000 miles from home.
