  • Fifth Wheel Not Level When Towing

I recently purchased a 2022 Solitude 2930RL fitted with a goose box and the TV is a 2019 Chevrolet 2500HD 4x4 with 34" tires and airbags. I did not raise the truck at all so the stock height, with the goose box set as high as it can be mounted, gives me about 5.5" to 6" trailer to bed rails but is nose high. I need to raise the trailer 2.5" at the axles to level it out for towing. I have called GD to see if they have a recommendation and they want to get on a video call to take a look. The existing hangers have already been reinforced at the factory so I really don't want to modify those. I would like to get 2.5" lifting blocks and new u-bolts to bring this back into level and have been trying to find what others are doing to remedy this situation but have found very little on the subject. My fifth wheel overall height is 13'-2" hooked up to the truck at the highest point and that should not change even with the lifting blocks on the axles. There is a company on that I found that makes specific lifting blocks for trailers as they are slimmer than the normal truck lifting blocks. GD first told me the dealer should have set this up during delivery but that did not happen and getting back into our local dealer take months and they are not fast with the repairs. Any thoughts or advise?

Do you need the oversized truck tires? Going to 20" could drop the truck 6 - 7 inches. Then adjust up with the airbags, as necessary.

From the picture it sure looks like you truck is lifted. The fender well gap over the rear tires sure indicates that. I agree with Ted. Go back to a stock 30" diameter tire size on the truck (18" to 20" wheels with a low profile sidewall.

You could look into a custom set of leafs to get your height where it needs to be. Blocking the axle can create other issues such as axle wrap and equalization issues during braking.

Yes the OAH will increase, notably at the front AC as the trailer high point is currently the king pin so anything done at the axles will keep the king pin the same but raise everything from the king pin back.

This is a stock 2021 Chev 2500 4x4 (that I was considering before I got the F350). This shows an unloaded box rail height of 59 1/2”. How does your truck compare to this measurement?

I agree, the springs would be my move over the blocks, Any respectable frame shop or heavy truck suspension shop could install new springs.
You have 2 choices, return the truck back to stock ride height or raise the trailer.

I would drop the truck back to the factory ride height. Fuel economy suffers anytime a vehicle is lifted and oversize tires are installed. Trucks do look nice sitting taller though.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I did not raise the rear of the truck from stock height, I put different keys on the torsion bars to level the front out. The rims and tires are aftermarket but the same size as stock 295/60/20 which are roughly 33ish tall. This trailer just seems to sit lower than others I have seen but I am going to get on with Grand Design and see what they recommend and probably visit the suspension shop as advised in your posts. My unloaded bed height is the 59-1/2", the same as Cate&Rob.

Hmmm . . . looking back at the picture in your first post and knowing that truck ride height is normal . . . there is definitely something not right with the trailer suspension. Several years back, we devised a relatively simple method of measuring "loaded arch height" of the trailer springs. This should be in the range of about 1 1/2" or half the 3" unloaded arch height. By taking these measurements you could start your quest for higher lift springs by knowing what you are at today. I am wondering if your trailer was built with lighter springs than it should have?

Measuring loaded arch height process attached . . .

LisanJim I lowered the height of the rear of my 2019F350. It came from the factory with 4" spacers on the rear axle, and I replaced them with the 2" ones used in a F250. At the time many were using 1" or even 5" aftermarket spacers.

Is it possible that since you leveled the front of the truck, this would now cause the rear to sag under load? You then adjust up with the air bags to level the truck? If so, you have raised the rear of the truck.

With the nose down originally the fifth wheel would be loaded and the rig would drop the back of the truck about 2-2.5 inches which would then level the truck under load and without the mods. The nose of the rig would also be 2-2.5 inches lower.

I am curious if the RV was used and someone "lowered" it for some reason. Can you post a picture of the suspension on the RV, including the spring hanger attachment and the equalizer?

Have been following this thread mainly out of curiosity for what I might learn.
It does look to me like your trailer is riding a bit lower than what I'm used to seeing - but it's a "gut" feeling without any data.
Your bedrail height seems high to me as well compared to what I've been tracking on my truck.

Just for informational purposes the measurements on my 2019 Cheverolet 3500 4x4 diesel SRW are:
56.25"-56.5" to top of the bed rail sitting in the driveway without anything hooked to it and airbags at 5 psi.
I typically measure the flat part of the fenderwell at centerline over the front & rear tires loaded & unloaded - front runs 39,25" empty to 39.00" loaded, rear runs 41.25"-41.50" empty & air bags at 5psi to 38.5"-38.75" loaded with 90psi in the airbags.
Have also been tracking weights on different trips including left/right side of the 5th wheel - drivers side is 800 lbs +/- heavier than the passenger side (3 slides - bunkhouse, kitchen, master bed) so I put all the tools and such on the passenger side of the garage and try to shift some of the panty items over.

Not sure if this will help or not, but it's what I've been tracking over the past couple of years and trips I've taken.

Have been told there's a T-shirt with "Let me overthink this" on it that's made for me..... but when I transitioned to full-timing I knew I'd be parked at a property or RV Campground enjoying places more than traveling so chose a SRW which means I'm right at the upper weight limits of the tow vehicle when traveling - and it's good to know details like this to help avoid being a video on YouTube!

This is at the center of the bed vertically even with the wheel centerline. at the front of the bed about 1/2" less at the back about 1/2" more
