  • Airlift airbags - how is the customer service?

Our current tow vehicle has the LoadLifter 5000 airbags. Recently we visited Big Bend National Park.

While going down Ol Ore Road I noticed a new clanking sound. Well, the clamp bar on the drivers side airbags was gone. The 2 long bolts were hanging from the bottom airbag support clanking against the trucks axle.

I called Airlift Customer Service and asked them to send me a new clamp bar. After a 3 minute wait I was talking to a live person. Expecting to pay about $30 for the part, I was very happy they will be sending me a new bar (with washers and nuts) at no cost.

I can highly recommend Airlift products based on the quality and customer service.

Also, remember to check that all nuts are tight

Even if they send nylock nuts, you might want to consider adding a thread locker compound.

A lot of roads in the US are competing for the worst road in America contest. I don't know if it's a published contest, but I have found road quality in the past few years (we will just leave the number out here for the sake of not dating too many people) have steadily become worse across the board.

I took my F350 in to my Ford dealer to get the axle tube welded per their service bulletin from last year. When they put everything back together they left off one of the clamp bars on my Loadlifter 5000. I just happened to get under the truck a few weeks later and noticed it. I emailed Airlift to pay for a replacement and they sent me TWO of them and the nylon nuts for free! The nylon nuts take a lot of force to put on. I can't imagine them just unscrewing.

pengle The issue with nylon lock nuts not holding has to do with a couple of things:

1 - Initial installation. Installation should be done with hand tools only as the high speed associated with power tools can result in the overheating of the nylon locking material, thus leading to heat forming and loss of holding power.

2 - location of the nuts. On the side closest to the exhaust it is possible that the nuts get heat cycled and again loose their holding power. In the off chance that sunlight can get to them the UV can also degrade the nylon leading to loss of holding power.

3 - Reuse. in the event nuts get reused, they will lock but have lost holding power.

2 and 3 are from my own personal experiences. I have had nylon lock nuts loose holding strength due to the factors listed. UV degradation takes time and usually direct sun exposure. For the installation using power tools, I do not remember where that information came from.

I put a set of acorn nuts on mine with Loctite. Not that I expect it to help with retention. Mostly to protect the idiot who does most of my maintenance and repairs from injuring himself on the exposed threads!

I re-installed with split washers and nylon lock nuts. I like split washers.
