  • Fifth wheel and truck bed collide

We tow a Reflection 27RL with a 2500HD 4x4 and only have 5 inches of clearance between the two at the back of the truck bed. This low clearance caused the two to hit when we made a turn onto a dirt road from a bit too high street. Fortunately the dent in the back corner of the truck bed is not too bad and the damage to the fifth wheel was only the plastic corner that can be repaired with glue. We’ll be camping here a few weeks but before we try getting back out onto the road are thinking about raising our pin box to provide more clearance and hopefully avoid more damage. We only have one more adjustment hole so not sure 1” will help much. For those in the know how much clearance should we have? On a previous trailer we had almost 10” using the same truck. Should the Lippert pin box have more adjustment that maybe we’re missing?

I believe that 6-7" is recommended , but like always more is better. Your term "raising" the pin box confuses me. I would think that lowering the pin box to the bottom set of holes on the frame mount would raise the front of the trailer away from the truck bed. Another adjustment , if you have it , would be to raise the hitch in the truck bed , would gain more clearance as well. Curious of how you went from 10" to 5" from one trailer to another.

You’re right. I meant to say lower the pin box so it will raise the FW. Dennis will double check but doesn’t think our hitch has any more adjustment. As for the difference between the two trailers I’m not real sure except we ordered our Carriage lifted so it would ride level with the 4x4 truck.

What kind of hitch do you have? Is there any vertical adjustment in it?

He’ll check but doesn’t think there is any more adjustment.

Dennis double checked the hitch and it does have an adjustment up to two inches. Thanks for the suggestion!
