Any suggestions on a shoveling method? I'm assuming we should look for plastic shovels to protect the roof. (We got snow coming this week)

We left a campground early on Saturday due to impending snow at home and on the drive home. Didn't want to make the 4 1/2 hour drive and turn it into longer. Got it tucked into it's home at home but it got a little bit on it.

I used one of those ice scrapers that had a brush on the end. As soon as it started to melt a bit I got up there and brushed it all off.

I would not even use a plastic shovel. Most I would use is a stiff broom. Plastic shovel can still have sharp edges to cut the roof material.

Yeah we had to cut our trip a day short as it was suppose to snow again the morning we were leaving and I didn't have chains for the trailer. My KO2 tires on the truck in the snow were awesome though. We currently live in Napa County and would have only pulled the trailer through 30 to 40 miles of snow highway but, that is all down hill so screw that.

Dallas d2reid has cleaned snow (a lot of snow) off RV roofs for years......maybe decades. Possibly Dallas will chime in with his process and what he uses and what he has learned over the years spending winters at ski resorts working ski patrol as I recall.

WOW! That is a sobering video. Hard to tell how fast they were going but I will guess a little too fast. Glad that there was no injuries.

That was probably the case, plus dealing with the downhill grade. The kid screaming gets me every time.

A good reminder of what can happen when the trailer is much heavier than the TV and traction is limited.

It would appear that the flashing tail lights are the brake lights?, so we can see that the driver is on and off the brake pedal trying to reduce speed without losing control . . . which was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, there is no way out of this, other than by significantly reducing speed much earlier before the highway curved to the right (the clarity of hindsight). You can see the "bump" at the 48 sec mark where the 5th wheel wants to continue straight and begins to push the back of the truck to the left. (an ironic demonstration of "momentum"). All the driver can do is counter steer to the left to stay in front of the trailer . . . but, he runs out of road. Luckily the oncoming transport saw what was happening and was able to stop before becoming involved.

I watched this when it was first posted and commented on the speed. I saw the speed in the jeep hit 39mph for a sec going down that hill. There is a follow up video where he said he had just switched to 4wheel as the beginning of this video. Looking at the truck tires in the second video they do not appear to be snow tires. They got caught in a snow storm that came on quick. Just glad everyone was ok.

The crazy thing when people say not enough truck, it was a F-450 dually. Just a sucky situation and definite pucker factor.

Snow rated tires or chains for TV and chains not cables for the trailer. Max and I mean max speed 25mph. I didn't have chains when we went but I do now just in case we hit snow going to Tahoe. We are looking at going back to Truckee this weekend with high of 50s and low of 30s. No snow projected but ill have those chains with me.

Ironically, 4WD would be of absolutely no value in this situation. In a braking situation, the number of axles that could be powered under acceleration doesn't matter. All trucks have 4 wheel braking. There would probably have been a better balance between trailer brake gain and perhaps diesel engine braking . . . but, there would have been no time to fine tune these things. The advantage of a dually spreading the weight across four rear truck tires becomes a detriment when these four tires have reduced the weight per tire across a low friction surface.

Handling a situation like this is all about "experience" and for most, the first time they get into this situation is on a highway surrounded by other traffic or ditches and guard rails. I have considerable experience teaching driving skills on low friction road surfaces . . . but, I have never tried this with a trailer. If you don't have the equipment described by BrentLove2GoFastUSCG it is best to just get off the road and wait for better conditions.
