    HI All,

We are new to the RV Travel life. We have a 2020 Grand Design Imagine 2500RL and will be traveling from Wisconsin To Charleston, SC in February, 2020 to escape some of the Wisconsin winter. Our question is - How do you veteran RVr's plan a trip from a cold climate to a warm climate when the weather can be an unknown? Do you make reservations ahead of time? Or do you just set out and try to find a campground as you travel without reservations? We have a campground reservation in Charleston, SC for three weeks.
We plan to make it to Champaign, IL and stay at a motel the first night. Then head to Nashville, TN, then Macon, GA, then Charleston, SC.
We will de-winterize in Nashville if the weather is warm enough. Any trip planning suggestions and help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you - BobV

I've done one trip with a winterized camper. On the way to Indiana I stayed in hotels. Parking with the camper attached was a nuisance. Doable, but motel parking lots aren't meant for travel trailers.

On the way back (to Florida) I stayed in campgrounds but used their facilities for the bathroom and shower. This was much preferable (for me as I was by myself) and it was much less expensive.

Consider Dad's Bluegrass Campground in Franklin, Kentucky as one possible stop. If you decide to leave your camper winterized while headed south they have clean, modern facilities. There's also an outstanding Mexican restaurant across the field from the campground. The owner will let you use his golf cart to get there (and back).

If you don't mind going just a wee bit further south than Macon, Fair Harbor Campground in Perry, GA (a place we stay quite often) is a nice stopover location. It's relatively easy to get over to I-16 by taking Hwy 96 (which is accessible after a short ride up I-75) then across to I-95 and then up to Charleston. If you do go to Perry, don't miss the peach ice cream at Lane's! If your schedule allows, stay an extra day and tour the aircraft museum outside of Warner-Robins AFB.

Charleston is awesome. So much history and the horse-drawn carriage rides are quite enjoyable. Have fun!

      Howson,

Thank you for your reply. I was also concerned about motel parking lots, but I have seen trailer/tow vehicles in motel lots. Just don't know ahead of time if there is room. Did you just take a chance? Or did you call ahead and ask if there is enough room? Thanks for the Kentucky and Perry campground info. We will look into those. Anxious to get to Charleston. We have heard so much about the area.
      Have a Merry Christmas.

I looked @ google maps & called, too. Still was dicey depending on where other guests parked.

BobV44 I doubt that you will get an advance commitment from a motel because they have no idea who will park where in their parking lot. Staying in campgrounds with electric hookup and open washrooms is quite doable. Finding an open campground in freezing climates can take some searching, but there are a few and this way you will have a reserved site to head for. This is what we do when "north of freezing" on our travels to/from Canada/Florida.

We travel to Florida from Cleveland and I just do a Google search for campgrounds near where we plan to end up the day, preferably close to the interstate. I de-winterize the first night. We prefer to stay in the camper than a hotel -- that is part of the reason we purchased it. You can look at Google reviews for the different campgrounds, and Google earth/view the campground. The reviews help a lot. We reserve a few weeks ahead of time if I am locked into our travel itinerary. You can also boondock but we prefer having a hookup and being in a campground. I detach only if I need to but prefer not to if the site is fairly flat. Drop the stabilizers to steady the camper for slide-outs. Our Florida site we lock into as soon as they are reserveable -- months ago.
