The means of retaining the threaded fasteners is the EGS backer which is relatively thin sheet metal. Thus, the best fasteners are sheet metal screws with deep but thin sharp threads. Lag bolts or wood screws have much different threads designed to hold in wood . . . but not ideal for sheet metal.

back to the hardware store I went for stainless hex head screws 5/16 which is next size up. Never thought about sheet metal screws but you make a good point. Thank you. Will get these..much cheaper too.
