...Is there supposed to be a part that connects it to the red switch? If so, what to do?

My front door dead bolt is loose and I can longer lock it form the inside. In fact, it'll just fall out of it' hole now.

I found the "connecting piece" that looks sort of like a small two-sided Allen wrench wedged into the styrofoam -- somehow it had come loose, and so then the dead bolt also.
It fits into the dead bolt on one end and the knob turning component on the other end.
Difficult to put back together, but I finally managed!Comment
