    Hi Jim,
We have wandered a bit off the topic of additional springs (Sumo or otherwise) for the trailer . . .

But, to add to the photo you posted of your GM 1/2 ton, attached are similar pictures of the rear springs on a standard F150 and the HDPP F150. The main difference is the addition of another spring leaf. As you know, I added a spring leaf to the heavy side of my Reflection 303 (actually went from a 4 leaf 2600 lb spring to a 5 leaf 3000 lb spring on that side. Adding a leaf rather than a sumo spring would be a way to accomplish the same thing and keep the original load paths.

To have this pic of your truck loaded as well as unloaded would be great.

        Cate&Rob Rob,

Agree. Thinking the sumo may not be as stiff while unloaded though.

Here is a pic of a truck from a local farmer who delivered wood to me where the truck was overloaded. He said it rode like a dream. In fact the spring in its S shape confirmed the truck was overloaded but the bump stop still had plenty of space left before contact. Notice how the rear diff contacts the tail pipe. Looks like different models and brands have different travel before the bump stops as well as spring rates. This one did not have it right where it should have been bottomed out IMO. At the same time, the suspension would not suddenly bottom out as Brian has described had it been properly loaded, but most likely will result in a failure under this loading. I believe my half ton was encountering jounce bumper contact in some conditions.

It appears I have one more spring than what you show, Jim. Here are two pics unloaded. I won't get one of it loaded for another week or so before our next outing.

            Bill,

From your pic on the winegard post, was this pic with your sumo springs installed?

I see you are using a WDH.

Jim, no it wasn't but this one is. Not full side, however.

                Bill,

I'll take a shot where I believe you may have been on the jounce bumper in some instances and your sumo springs with progressive spring rates are supplementing to prevent this occurrence.

Can you post your tongue weight and payload capacity of your truck and weight capacity of your hitch?

Rob, what do you think is going on?

What I used when determining which model I could pull with my truck.

                  2018 Nissan Titan Pro4X 9,230 max 80% = 7,384

Your payload will be listed on the yellow tag in your door jamb.
