  • Sharing a hitch cargo tray stabilzing technique

Hello, I wanted an option to secure a hitch mounted cargo tray on the rear of the camper. I researched several make and models and wanted a folding hitch tray so it could store in upright position. I found a 60" tray I liked and mounted it in the hitch. Even with the U-clamp hitch stabilizer bracket there was a LOT of movement and seemed loose in the hitch receiver. A folding tray adds even more movement due to the extra hinge mechanism. To remove all movement, I added two 3/8" x 2" eye bolts to the tray on the camper inbound side, left and right. I bought a simple trailer safety chain packet and used the hooks on the safety chain holes on the 2" hitch. I used 3/8" zinc turnbuckles and repair links between the chain and the eye bolts on tray and tightened these to totally stabilize the left right rocking movement of the hitch tray. I used bolt cutters to cut the excess chain from what I needed. tightening the turnbuckles on left and right side snug the tray up nicely. In the folded position, the turnbuckles also take the front/back wobble out as well. I suppose you can also use ratchet straps but I did not want that look. Of course, the tray is not to be overloaded and there is a hitch sticker on the camper describing the weight limitations. I may have $30 for the whole setup from HD/Lowes. I was glad to see the tray does not stick out any further than my ladder. I won't use the tray all the time but I know I have a good system when I need it.

I like your set up. I have been doing some checking and after seeing what you came up with I may try something similar. Thanks for sharing
