  • Payload/Axle Ratings

    Hello everyone,
Taking the plunge into the world of RV’ng, and looking for some help. I have been doing research on what seems to be the two most important aspects of towing, which is payload and axle weight ratings. I have an understanding of payload. What I am very confused about is GAWR. My tow vehicle is a 21 Ram 2500 Laramie Crew Cab, 4x4. Payload is 2145#. Front axle 6000 and rear 6040. GVWR is 10k. Shouldn’t the axle ratings equal 10k? The trailer we are looking at is a Reflection 280rs. Can someone please explain how this specific trailer applies to my axle ratings. Only info I am finding online is the definition of what axle weight rating is but no breakdown of how it actually applies to a 5th wheel in real world scenarios. I appreciate in advance in responses, or direction to related links. Thanks

GVWR is artificially set at 10,000 lbs for a 3/4 ton truck. This is done for licensing restrictions in some states . . . although, some manufacturers have recently gone beyond the 10K for their 3/4 ton trucks. Thus, your axles capacities could quite likely exceed 10K. Your payload is 10K minus the actual weight of your truck.

Also, with a 5th wheel your rear axle will take almost all the pin weight from the trailer. And you will be surprised at how much that pin weight will be once you're all loaded up. It will take up the majority of your payload.

MannyB I used the scales at work (less stress) on a weekend and weighed the truck and trailer combination, See post 31 for my real world numbers. https://gdrvowners.com/forum/gdrv4li...1-303rls/page3 this is essentially in travel trim minus passenger in the truck. I weighed everything the weekend before we left as the camper was fully loaded.

I have moved the super slide to move weight forward to the steer axle.
