    We are looking at a 23LDE. My question, what is the tongue weight when ready to go camping for 2 and a dog? The web site lists the hitch weight at 524 with a 5597 dry weight and the GVWR of 6995. So in theory, the hitch weight could be managed when the trailer at max load so it that was 10% or about 700lbs. That leaves 1398 of the trailer from the GVWR for propane, tanks and gear in the trailer. We don’t have a lot of extra payload capacity in the truck so my thought would be that the trailer would hold what the what we need for living such as the food, clothes, dishes, etc. small propane grill, outside chairs.

    The tow vehicle is a Tundra with the tow package, sway control and Adaptive Variable Suspension. So the truck should be capable. My concern is staying under the payload which is 1264. It would be 2 of us and a large dog so passenger weight with some buffer would be 420. That would leave us 144. If the hitch actually comes in at 600, then that is about 250lbs of gear in the truck. If the hitch comes in at 800 and the gear can all go in the trailer leaving the truck without gear, that works too.


    As you may be able to tell, I have done some reading, but have no experience. I would appreciate any information or guidance here. The 23LDE is the lightest option with the layout / features we are looking for. If you have information on other models in that weight range and the loaded tongue weight, that would be helpful to get an idea of tongue weight changes when loaded for the trip. Thank you!

    My .02 is don't over think things. I prefer to load the truck bed vs the trailer, that equates to better towing for me.

      Since you've done some reading, it's likely you've come across the towingplanner.com criteria of 10-15% tongue weight.

      Using the website "simple tongue/pin weight estimator" the 23LDE's GVWR of 6,995 lbs is entered. (GVWR, of course, is the maximum the trailer should weigh loaded down with "stuff".)

      The least amount of tongue weight recommended by the website is 699 lbs (10%). The most tongue weight is 1,049 lbs (15%). This assumes the trailer is loaded to the max -- what I used during the planning phase to understand my truck and trailer's capabilities.

      Based on the 23LDE's floorplan, my guess is the tongue weight will come in on the lighter side when the trailer is at it's max GVWR. Why? Because a lot of the storage--especially the kitchen--is in the rear of the camper. This is both a "good news" and "bad news" scenario. The good news is the camper should carry most of the weight. The bad news is it might be challenging to get enough tongue weight to keep sway under control.

      After buying both my truck and camper it took many times across a CAT scale (in "ready to camp" configuration) to dial in how the camper was packed and what settings to use on the Blue Ox WDH.

        howson, thank you for the detailed information! I found your point about how the layout with all the rear storage impacting hitch weight very useful. With this model, we should fully utilize the pass through storage at the front for heavier items and the front under bed storage. Another factor on loading and managing hitch weight will be the location of the fresh, gray, and black water tanks. I have not found information on where the tanks are located for this model. With a scale to know the hitch weight, it should be manageable. We really like the layout and plan to make this our first travel trailer.

          Before you count on the weight of a full tank to manage your tongue weight, check with GD to make sure this camper is rated for travel with full tanks. Some are not and I have read threads where people have had them fall out the bottom during travel.

            I agree with TribForce. While there are forum members who have traveled with a full fresh water tank, there is more than one anecdotal tale of woe from individuals who weren't successful. Additionally, consider the weight added by a full water tank.

            FYI, the fresh water tank in the 23LDE is nearly centered over the rear-most spring hanger. Unfortunately that means adding fresh water will add to the overall weight on the suspension, but might not add much (if anything) to tongue weight. Experimentation will be required. Another reason for the Sherline Tonque Scale.

            The black tank is directly under the toilet, so easy to visualize the location. The bathroom gray is forward of the black.

            If adding weight to the tongue was required for towing stabilization and all other options are exhausted, consider adding water in the bathroom gray tank. Again, experimentation and practice is recommended to understand what works for your setup.

              If the fresh tank is centered or its center is over the rear axle or hanger it will take weight from the tongue thus transferring not only the weight added but also the weight it relieves from the tongue.

              The easiest way to add tongue weight is to plan your packing. Simple things like bottled water stored under the bed adds weight quickly in the front of the axles and is something you will be using over the course of the stay along with the food stored in the pantry that you will be using. These 2 loads counteract each other as depleted. Other items that you can store under the bed or in the front compartment also help with moving the load forward. Yes it's a bit inconvenient at times and it does take a bit of planning or effort once you reach the destination.
