  • Serious Rust on Interior Curt Flex Air Pin Box?

This post is for those who have installed a Curt Flex Air pin box on their Reflection (or any other FW). We have a 2023 320MKS, and 2 months after we bought it (back in November) I replaced the stock pin box with the Curt Flex Air. It's rained here in SoCal more than usual, but I noticed that DAYS after a rain, the pin box is leaking water and starting to leave a rust stain on the concrete. So I started to look around and I found inside the upper end of the pin box that there is water sitting on an approx 10" x 10" horizontal surface that is really rusty now. The top of the pin box has a slated (to the front) surface on it, but it doesn't hold any water, so the water is coming either down the sides or from somewhere I can't see. But I did manage to get some pics with my phone, and it doesn't look good. Has anyone else had this issue? I've emailed the seller as well as Lippert to see what can be done. Any ideas?! I'm surprised that surfaces were not powder-coated separately before assembly so this doesn't happen as quick as it did.

I don't have the pin box you referenced, but I have had my share of rust to deal with on various parts of my RV (and house). What I use is Corroseal, both the cleaner and the product itself. I've had good success with it. Google (or use DuckDuckGo) to search for Corroseal and there will be a lot to read (or watch), so check YouTube, too.

If you want to read more options, enter this into your browser's search engine: rust site:gdrvowners.com The list that returns will be all the threads on this forum that mention the word "rust".

Forum moderators are not GD employees--we are volunteers and owners presumably just like yourself. Unless specifically mentioned otherwise, we have nothing to gain should you choose to purchase a product or engage a service we discuss on this forum.

Good to know! I will check it out! I have managed to get most of the water out- it's not a very accessible area to get to. I am also going to put a rubber gutter up on the bottom part of the front cap to try to direct the water coming off the cap away from right above the pin box. We've got more rain coming in a few hours so it'll give me a chance to see if I can at least stem most of the problem. Thanks!

I'm not surprised at the lack of paint in areas. I did the MoreRyde upgrade on mine and when my nephew gets here in a couple of months with his TIG rig I am going to have him seal up a few areas that they used for assembly (key notches between parts) to eliminate a very similar but not as bad issue.

Is that area on the pin end or the house end of the box?

Can you drill a hole or 2 up from the bottom to allow drainage?

It's right in the interior of the pin box, and very hard to get to! I had to remove the 7wire junction box so I could get my arm in it. It is right below that slanted middle top and is part of the upper jaw of the pin box.

But, good news!!! I am pleasantly surprised! Lippert is going to do a good will replacement of the Flex Air pinbox, and will be sending directly to me no charge, shipping tomorrow! Thank you Lippert!

I didn't want to do anything until I heard from Lippert, and the good news is this morning I did hear from the Chassis Dept, and they have authorized a good will replacement of the Flex Air pinbox, and will be sending directly to me no charge, shipping tomorrow! Thank you Lippert!

That is great news. Check for some drain holes before installing, add some and paint them if they are not there, 1/4" diameter should be good.

This is very interesting as I am about to get the Curt Flex Air pinbox. Is Lippert saying this shouldn’t happen? How do you know the replacement won’t do the same thing?

I think I found the issue, and it mainly is because the front cap on our Reflection 320MKS slopes down to allow water to accumulate on the top of the pin box. I had a whole bunch of PVC gutter rail that I cut off a small length and attached it to the bottom of the cap right above the pinbox and it has eliminated the water issue. I will also put on on top of the pinbox to keep it from going backwards into the sloped frame of the pinbox.

I was surprised this was an issue with a Curt or Lippert component- and I'm super surprised there isn't a cover over that void at the top of the pinbox to keep water out. The pure fact that they replaced a $1500 item with no questions tells me it wasn't supposed to do that. I guess we'll find out when I get the replacement if it's any different!
