  • Andersen Ultimate Hitch and Trailair Rota-Flex pinbox

In an effort to reduce/eliminate occasional chucking between the truck and trailer, I found the lockout kit recommended by Anderson for those pulling 5th wheels with the AUH and Trailair Rota-Flex pinbox is not adequate. There is still a good 1/8"-3/16" of gap that allows pin movement. I'm using the Blue-ox version of the lockout kit, but it is functionally identical to the one sold by Andersen.

I don't have an audible chucking sound, but a forward-backward jerking of the truck sometimes after going over a rough patch of road at highway speeds with the rig. Interesting to me that this pivoting pinbox is designed to reduce chucking when using a standard hitch, but appears to create it when using the solid ball/socket connection of the Anderson Ultimate Hitch.

What I've tried to do, to further reduce this movement, is install aluminum angle extrusions front and rear, to take up that gap. Have not tried this yet to see if it will lock up the pin securely. Long term, I'd like to pick up a used standard pinbox, and swap this rota-flex out. I really like the AUH for its light weight, and resulting easy installation/removal.

Anyone here towing with this hitch and pinbox configuration? How is your experience with it?

I do not tow with that type of hitch set up. I just wanted to say I am not a fan of the AUH hitch. If you want to have an easy hitch to remove and a clean bed get a Reese Goosebox or a Gen Y goose ball hitch and be done with the chucking, from what I hear. Either of these options gives you an easy clean bed when needed. Just an opinion here and trying to help.

Blocking or shimming the pin box you have should not need to be done and I worry that you may cause issues with the pin box in the long run.

I also do not have an Andersen setup, but it is difficult to understand how cushioned movement in the Rota-Flex pinbox would cause chucking between TV and trailer that would be worse than with a standard 5th wheel hitch. Both should have a tight fit between pin or ball and hitch jaws or socket. Is there any sign of movement between the Andersen frame and the bed of the truck? From my understanding, this interface can be difficult to keep tight.

Hmm...I think I'm looking at this wrong. Some cushion should only help dampen movement between the truck and trailer. I rarely get this forward-backward jerking, and thought it might be reduced with a firmer connection between the vehicles, but that must be incorrect.

Checking the Andersen frame to rail to truck bed connections, all are tight currently. I actually use a rubber mallet to tap the pins in place on some of the attachment points. I have the steel frame that does not need the pad under it. Still there could be some movement here. There is a little perceptible movement between the ball and the steel tripod socket. I will check this often.

It's true I should not need to shim the pinbox as much as I have to lockout movement of the rota-flex. The lockout kits state they are designed to prevent severe angles of the Andersen socket relative to the ball. They are not really lockout kits as much as movement limiting kits. You've given me some good thoughts here, Brian.

Boy that goosebox is tempting, but might be a $50 solution to a $0.50 problem. My truck would need a turnover ball mount installed, or at least a rail-mount ball, to use the goosebox hitch. Looking at $2000-2500 to get that equipment - not ready to do that yet.

I think you will always get a bit of back and forth chucking. I had some with my B&W hitch and I have some with the Curt Crosswing. I think if the lockout doesn't allow for any movement you will get more chucking.

BWSTGDS do you have standard rails in the truck now? If so, then a rail to ball adapter is readily available https://www.etrailer.com/Gooseneck-H...URT/16055.html not exactly cheap, but easy conversion to do if you do not want to go through the trouble of installing a ball in the bed.

Yes sir, that's a good way to convert, but the price of admission for the goosebox itself is too high for me at this time.

I think I should get some miles under my belt with this rig and see if I can learn more about chucking with the AUH, and how to minimize it. I have a friend has used the steel AUH with two different 5th wheels across this country, and swears he has no chucking at all. Both of his rigs had a standard fixed pinbox.
