  • 5th wheel weight hitch weight

    Hello all,

I made the mistake of purchasing a truck based on the total weight of the 5th wheel and have figured out that I am over on CCC by about 500lb hitched up and with the 5th wheel loaded. My question today is has anyone done any counter balancing with weight on a 5th wheel? Like adding 300lb to the rear of the frame? Unfortunately its a rear living and the basement and cargo holds are in front of the axels. When I use the only tank behind the axels (fresh water) as ballast it only takes off 120lb. I has a rear hitch, I could add 300lb there bit I would have to put it on and off every trip, I would rather do something perinate. Any thoughts? I don't want to move to a DW set up if I can get away with it..

I can't address your question specifically, but permit me to opine for moment to (unfortunately) write I think you'll eventually be inducted into the infamous Two Time Tow Vehicle club. Trust me, you are far from alone. I made a similar mistake and ended up trading my brand new (sniff) F-250 in on the used DRW I have now. (Same year, same trim--amazing how similar they are!)

When all was said and done I figured it cost me an additional $5K over what it would have been if I'd just done it right the first time. One of those "life lessons". I don't regret getting the right truck for the weight I carry (Honda Goldwing in the truck bed and towing a maxxed-out 315RLTS).

Hey there. How is it that you know you are overweight? Are you using actual weights on a truck scale loaded as you would be for a typical trip, with your passengers aboard the truck? Also, what RV did you buy, and what truck and hitch do you have? I gained over 300 pounds of pin weight capacity just by changing out my hitch. Your truck has specified axle weights (GAWR), but also tire capacity listed on the sidewall with inflation data. What exactly is over? Does the RV ride level in relation to the truck? Nose high or low will slightly affect the pin weight.
