  • Andersen or Pullrite Superlite question with 295RL

I am new to this site. We are looking to purchase a used Grand Design 295RL. We have a 2022 RAM 2500 gasser, crew cab 4x4, short bed on order. Should have hopefully in April. We are in no hurry for the 5th wheel as we feel it will take some time to find a used 295RL in our price range. Also we're thinking our truck will have about a 3000 lbs payload so that is one reason we're wanting to go with a lighter hitch. It will just be my husband and myself. No kids or animals. The hitch weight on the 295RL is 1434lbs dry.

My question is, we are researching the Andersen and the Pullrite Superlite. Our truck will be the reg bed at 6.4'. I think I read that we will have to lock out the pin box. Any info or suggestions will be appreciated.

    1st, welcome to the forum.

2nd, verify that converting to a gooseball vs king pin will not void the frame warranty if any is left.

3rd, personally I think the Andersen needs a bit of reinforcing. The pullrite appears to be built a bit sturdier (plating between the hoops and miter cut vs bent ends).

We have used our Anderson hitch since 2018 and have had good results over the past 20k miles. Very easy to install and remove. You will probably get various comments from the traditional hitch folks but the Anderson's hold up very well when installed and used properly. I would also look at the goosebox hitch but check if it is comparable with your 5th wheel.

P.A. we are towing one of the largest and heaviest Solitudes with the Pullrite. I chose this over the Anderson for the reasons mentioned above In #2 by Joseph. We first had the one that mounted to a underbed mounted BW gooseneck ball, but that caused a bit of chucking. I've since switched to the ISR mounted version; chucking issue solved. Over 10K miles and counting. It is very convenient to hook and unhook because all is done from the area of the left taillight of the truck with no step stool added. I fabricated my own tool from PVC pipe and a hook, to replace the short one that came with the hitch. No stepladder or leaning over the side of the bed. There are no frame warranty issues with this hitch. Also it is considered a fifth wheel and as such no safety chains are necessary as they are with the Anderson. If you have a rotating pin box, then yes you would need a lockout wedge or other means to defeat the rotation. Widely available and specific to your pinbox and possibly hitch. There are a few good videos on you tube for both hitches. Happy shopping!
