I'm late to this thread, but I also use a Synology NAS--actually two of them--one at home and one in the camper. The one in the camper gets packed up in it's original shipping box as the drives are old-fashioned "spinners". Both NAS' are four bays.
The NAS has a RAID setup so critical information is on two separate drives simultaneously. There is another drive that I use for additional backups using Synology's HyperBackup (that comes free with the NAS).
I use FreeFileSync as recommended by Jlawles2 with external USB drives as an ADDITIONAL backup...just in case. Why? Should the NAS completely fry itself (and all the drives therein) I've got the external backups, too, created by FreeFileSync. The latter is a bit labor and time intensive (where the NAS stuff is all automated), but I'm loath to lose any of my personal information.
Another incredible benefit of a Synology NAS--you can backup and save your computer's configuration. EVERYTHING and do what's call a "bare metal restore". I love this feature, because if an update completely messes up my (or the DW's) computer I can restore the computer back to a previous timeframe. This is also a manual process (I have calendar reminders in my phone for all the manual processes) but again, well worth the time IMHO.
