  • Camper damaged during storm on dealers lot.

We purchased a 2020 Transcend 265BH in mid March. We've been waiting over a month to take delivery. It has a broken window that needs to be fixed. On Monday the dealer calls to tell us that part of their roof blew off during a storm and hit our trailer. Needless to say it now needs a new roof skin, has dented siding in the front and back, and may need a new AC unit. All of this has happened before we have even taken delivery!! Now who knows how long it will take to be repaired. And will it be repaired at Grand Design standards. On top of that the dealer was insistent that we needed to file a claim with our insurance company. We feel that the insurance responsibility lies with them. Since this happened while on their property and in their possession.

Our big concern is the integrity of the unit once it is repaired. Will it be up to Grand Design standards?

The siding and AC unit shroud are easy fixes. The roof, however, I hope the dealer patched immediately (while waiting to do the permanent repair) with eternabond or some other sealant to keep water from penetrating the trailer. I strongly suggest checking ASAP to ensure this was done. Water is the enemy of RVs and will quickly do a lot of damage.

No one here can answer your question regarding the quality of the dealer repair. There are independent RV inspectors you could hire to do an inspection to give you peace of mind, but it will cost a few $$. https://nrvia.org/locate/

A call to your insurance company is a good place to start to find out who's responsible for the cost of the repairs.

Sorry for your troubles and hopefully this gets resolved quickly so you can enjoy your new camper.

My first question is to clear up a confusion. You "purchased" it a month ago but haven't "taken delivery". Have you signed the titling PPW where the PPW has been sent to DMV? If so, then unfortunately this may belong to you and your insurance company and up to them to subjugate the dealerships insurance. If you haven't done the titling, then it still belongs to the dealer and their insurance. Then the question arises as to would you be willing to accept this unit without a full roof replacement? Does the dealer have a comparable unit on the lot or in the pipeline (not that the pipeline matters much right now).

Yes, all paperwork was signed a month ago. We were still waiting to take delivery.

If the determination is made that your insurance is responsible, you’re going to need a whole new roof membrane. Insurance won’t allow anything but full repair - no patching, etc. If this is where you end up - I strongly recommend that you ask your insurance company to allow the replacement to be an RV FlexArmor sprayed-on roof. This product is an outstanding value, approved installers are trained expertly and do a very thorough prep job. The material is virtually indestructible, HAS NO CAULKING whatsoever, and comes with a transferable lifetime no-leak warranty. In short, it’s flat out amazing and looks beautiful. After my last roof damage, my insurance allowed this system to be installed instead of traditional membrane replacement. Couldn’t recommend more highly.

With apologies to the OP for going slightly OT, where did you have this done--Jacksonville, Fl, by any chance? Something I'm considering.

I believe that this product was developed in Florida, so you may be in luck.
RV Flex Armor installers (there are not many) can be located by visiting: https://rvroof.com/find-a-location/

My installer was Hwy 29 RV Rescue in Bertram, Texas near Austin.
These guys are amazing and do really expert work.
They post before, during and after photos of almost all of their installs on their Facebook page: https://m.facebook.com/Hwy29RVRescue/

I can’t recommend them highly enough.
The work they did for me was on my current 2012 Sandpiper. I have ordered a new Solitude 380FL, and I guarantee the first time that new roof needs repair (let’s face it, they all eventually get a hole or tear from a branch or storm damage at some point), I’m putting RV Flex Armor on it!

Now, don’t confuse RV FlexArmor with other products. This stuff cannot be beat. Almost 1/4” thick and tough as a boot. The finished roof is one solid surface. They remove all vents, caps and A/Cs and seal inside those openings before reassembly with new A/C seals and NO CAULK or sealants anywhere. They even add vent covers. This is the last roof you’ll ever have and with NO yearly maintenance. Just amazing.

That would be nice, but the closest one to me is over 8 hrs away.

Not the same animal at all, actually. The number shared is for RV Armor - which is a rolled-on liquid membrane. A lot of people like it and it is convenient that they will come to you.

But RV FlexArmor is in a league by themselves. This is a sprayed on urethane product applied in two layers - grey base and white UV protectant coat afterward. This stuff is almost 1/4” thick and is super tough. I don’t think RV Armor offers a lifetime transferable leakproof warranty? Cost to re-roof my 40 fifth wheel was about $7500. Which was still about 1/2 of what was quoted for traditional membrane replacement. Insurance company was thrilled to have the FlexArmor option presented to them. Cost them half as much as traditional repair and has the lifetime warranty. No sealants of any kind ever needed again. It’s all one cohesive roof, bonded to every penetrating fixture or vent. I have seen nothing else like it. Won’t ever do anything but RV FlexArmor for roofing repairs from here on out.

Our 2020 Transcend Xplor was damaged on the dealers lot during a storm. This was before we took delivery but after all the papers were signed. Our only option was to file an insurance claim and have it repaired. Our concern was the repairs not being done to factory standards. Sure enough for some reason during repairs they added a second awning rail underneath the factory one. No one could explain why this was done. So they are going to remove it and replace the siding underneath. My other concern is the corner seals and seals around windows and baggage doors where the metal siding was replaced. I’m not sure if they used pvc foam as Grand Design does. Very frustrating as this is a brand new unit!

If it were me, I'd do two things.

                        1. Contact my insurance company and explain what happened. They will determine the facts and assign responsibility. If they determine that the dealership and/or their insurance is responsible, they can make that happen.
                        2. Contact a local attorney and get their advice. Quite often, they will listen to your story and make a suggestion on how to proceed. Sometimes this initial advice is free.
