  • 2020 GMC LB + Bakflip MX4 question

Looking at adding a Bakflip MX4 to our 2020 GMC Denali long box (8') and am concerned if it will cover the CHMBL or bed view camera when folded up.
Any one here running that particular configuration?
    Thanks -Rob-

I am running a Ford not GM, so it could certainly be different but it is a long bed. Mine does not cover the CHMBL. That said I do not run with it up very often. I’m able to run with it folded ask the way back but “down”. That gives me an area with a bit of shelter to keep things that I don’t want directly in the rain (like my generator and a couple storage totes. Something that was not super clear at the dealer I bought from, the long bed version has four panels rather than the larger ones. The stack gets pretty high and heavy when they’re all folded up. I think next time I might consider a roll up.

I hadn't considered that. I need to stay away from a hard style roll up as they take up space at the front of the bed that I use for my portable fluid tanks.
      Good to know, thanks

Yeah that’s the debate for sure, I’d have to give up the space. I had a soft trifold before this, it was much more manageable, but did not fold up all the way to the cab, so I could not easily get under the “shelf” to place things. With this I flip it all the way to the cab then fold it down to get them out of the direct weather. I’m really happy with it except for the weight.

According to the product description on this link, the camera is not obstructed.

On Bak's own website though they make a note that "Some 8' applications may not allow for 3rd brake light visibility due to the height of cab and light location."

It shouldn't be a big deal if it does, but I would like to know before making the purchase.

It may be best to speak with a representative and make this conditional to the purchase. I moved from a tri-fold to a roll up and never thought I would like it. Then found it to be far more useful.
From what I see based on the design, the tonno cover below looks identical to the factory option for a soft cover. After having the trifold blow off from a poorly designed front mount, I moved to a cover that cannot come loose while folding completely out of the way. Look at the front mount in how these folding covers attach to the TV bed where most are dangerous after a few years with their combination of metal and plastic attachments.

Yeah I had two different Truxedos on my short bed trucks and loved them. Only thing I really prefer on this over that is the “shelf” it gives me in the front out of the weather. It’s really nice on the long bed.

I could see that being a positive. My tri-fold had two clamps at the front that attached to a plastic or nylon piece that slid along the cross bar. The issue was the plastic only partially encompassed the cross bar and spread out over time from creep. Took about one second for it to be gone and thank goodness nobody was hurt.
Wish I could recall the brand where I would be happy to list it here as one not to buy.

Wow that’s crazy. I forget how mine attached but it seemed pretty secure. Only thing I disliked was since it didn’t hinge up by the cab, so it was a pain to get under it to get the stuff I had there. This one is much better for that but it still isn’t perfect. A couple of the seals on the hinges are kind of funky and don’t always seat right. I’m starting to think nothing is perfect lol. Like I said, I hate to give up the space but I think I might try one of the ones that roll up into the canister next time. The salesman tried to talk me into one when I told him I had a fifth wheel but I had heard really good things about the Bakflip.

Update: Bought the Bakflip MX4. The install was pretty straight forward. Only needed an extra set of hands to lift the cover onto the truck. It is quite heavy.
As to my initial question; when folded up against the cab, it is just below the cameras. The CHMBL is fully unobstructed. However, the method they use to lock it into that position seems a bit wimpy to me. I don't think I would want to travel any distance with it folded all the way up.
For my truck, I think it could be about 1-2" longer as well. It fully covers the bed but is only about 3/4" of an inch over the front bed rail.
It is a 7 segment cover BTW. One short front segment + 6 folding segments. 4 of which have the latches to lock it to the side rails.
All in all, I am happy with it.

Kinda old post I know - but I’m in a similar boat now. Long bed, considering the bakflip as pictured, can you still see your fifth wheel hitch or gooseneck ball in the bed camera when the cover is folded all the way forward close to cab, but still in the down position?
Any other feedback after having it for some time?
                        thanks

I think so. The reason I say think is that honestly I never use that camera. I find the image is too small to be of any use. What I do use is one of the rubber pads on the folded up tonneau. Using the rear view mirror and that rubber pad lined up with the pin box, usually puts me within an inch of centre.
One issue I do have with it, is that when folded and the trailer hitched, if I need to do a jack knife turn, or any turn more than about 45 degrees, I have to be very careful as the corner of the folded up tonneau can catch the bottom lip of the front cap on the trailer. I have a couple of scars in the fibreglass now due to that.

Good luck getting one that does not arrive bent or damaged from shipping. I've had MX4 on three separate trucks and I loved them. I tried to order one for the new RAM last March and it was a nightmare. 1st arrived with bent rails, 2nd same way, tried a 3rd time, same damage. I finally gave up. I have a Peragon aluminum folding cover now but it folds down into the bed at the cab wall, accordian-style. I wish I'd had better luck with the BAK-flip, I really liked them. Neither the BAK-flip or the Peragon are hard to install. Good luck.
