  • Dual Pane Windows

Seems like very few Grand Design fifth wheels have dual pane windows. For those of you with single pane windows, do you have a lot of moisture build up on the inside when it is cold outside?

I have not had any moisture build up on the inside of our single pain windows. We do not full time or winter camp , if we can help it. I do however leave a window cracked open or even a roof vent , we have the max air vent covers. This allows fresh air to circulate through the camper and helps a lot with the "stuffieness" when running the furnace.

    Also welcome to the forum.

Yes! So much condensation that we can't see out in the morning without wiping down the windows. The water pools on the sill on the big window by the dinette, too. This even happens in places like the southwest (where we are now) when the temps get below freezing - no matter that the relative humidity outside is only 30%. Living in the rig generates moisture inside: cooking, breathing, showering, washing dishes... you name it. We always use the exhaust fans when cooking or showering. If we were keeping this rig, I would consider a small dehumidifier. This is why our new rig is being built with dual pane windows.

When my customers talk about dual pane, they typically interchange the words and say thermal pane. I tell them the windows are not thermal. One of my GD factory reps told me that dual pane windows only increase the R-value by 1/10th of 1%. The dual pane will help with condensation and noise reduction. The customer will need to do a cost/benefit and determine if the >$1,000 cost is worth it. Not to mention the wait while a unit is ordered to their specifications.

I have read that many people have issues with condensation, yet we do not. Perhaps it's because we tend to stay in semi-arid lands, 30-40% humidity is the norm of us. But we have traveled in high humidity areas and still do not have condensation issues. Maybe we are just dry people.

For what it's worth my dual pane windows have this sticker on them, don't know the science behind it, but our other 5th wheel had single pane and we prefer the dual pane. We are often if single digit and sub-zero locations.

            bduerst Welcome to our forum!

We have single pane glass and the only time that we have significant condensation is after a rapid change from hot to cold in outside temperature. This means that the outside of the glass gets cold while the inside of the trailer is still full of high humidity warm air. The key to this is ventilation as Country Campers describes. We will run the furnace with the roof vents open to dry out the trailer. Exhausting the moist interior air draws in the much dryer outside air and the condensation problem gets solved fairly quickly. Then we can close the roof vents and condensation is not a problem.

Most salesman say they are not beneficial because they want to sell you a RV off of the lot.... My 29rs has dual pane, my 220rk doesn't. The dual pane is quieter and have never had condensation issues with it. If the 220rk had of offered dual pane as an option I would have gotten it.

Speaking from a Product Specialist point of view, we will always want you to own a unit on the lot first, (that's not a big secret). Then it comes to a COST/BENEFIT for the customer. Is it worth the ~$1500 and a wait of 3-5 months depending on time of year. You'll have to ask yourself, is the juice worth the squeeze?

We ordered our 2016 Reflection with dual pane windows. Several of the windows were really difficult to slide open which we needed to do daily. So, when we ordered our 2019 Solitude 373FB-R, we chose not to get dual pane windows. We later learned the new flush mount dual pane windows pop open at the bottom rather than slide side to side. Since we never experienced condensation during our winter stay in Palm Springs with our 2019 Solitude, we chose not to order dual pane windows on our 2020 Solitude 310GK-R.

We originally ordered the dual pane windows to eliminate condensation and reduce noise. We couldn't tell any difference between the windows. But that's just us!!!
