Stair tread

Our stair tread color is fading on composite material and I'm looking for ways to recolor them. Our Solitude is only 10 months old and we were led to believe this composite was to wear much better than wood.

From all the scratches shown in the photo, I'll going to guess that you're traveling with pets, and that even if you can re-stain the composite the damage will occur again. You might be better off replacing or covering the treads with a more scratch resistant, pet friendly material. Some carpet tacked in place over the treads will protect the tread from scratches and provide slip-resistant footing for your pets. There are other options out there.

That looks like what would be referred to as a "Hand Scraped" finish with the rough cut lines still present.

You can re-stain as you want, but as John mentions, it's probably going to happen again. The only real option to attempt to keep it from happening after repairing would be to try an exterior floor urethane.

In either case to minimize it looking like a repair, you may need to remove the tread and strip it completely. Contact GD and see if they will provide or offer at a discount replacements. If you get replacements, apply urethane before installing for added protection. Keep your eye on the finish and if it shows signs of excessive wear, re-apply urethane.

If you use the oil based, you can make a "wipe on" out of it by thinning it with the clean up solvent. Not certain of the ratio, but 25% solvent or more by volume will thin it quite a bit.

Ours did basically the same thing, but it has remained just like the photo for the last year. I’m going with “that’s how it’s supposed to look”
