I think it matched pretty well. I think the final color depends on the wood you use. Since it's at floor level, I wasn't too concerned about the color match.

That mod should work fine. When I removed the outer panel to install my dishwasher, there is a support inner panel -- about 5/8 inch thick. Your 1x2's are just below that support panel. It extends from the baseboard to the top counter and to both sides. If that is supported, you should be fine. If you unscrew the base board of the cabinet, you can see the lower structure from the inside of the cabinet. I removed the support panel, but installed full top to bottom support boards on the sides.
