  • Can I use the aluminum wheel lug nuts on my spare steel wheel?

I put my spare tire on today. I'm going to use it for a 750 mile trip since I have worn out inner treads on just one tire (likely bent axle or spindle). I do plan to remedy that problem at a shop on the way home next March, but don't trust the worn tire for this trip. I used the same lug nuts that were on my aluminum wheel.

Should I find some other lug nuts for the steel wheel?

No need for different lug nuts, the stock ones will work.

It makes sense that they should. I had my torque wrench set to 110 foot pounds and was wondering if I was enlarging the holes in the wheel. I never got to 110 lbs.

The cone shape in the aluminum wheel is the same as the steel wheel. One thing to watch for is any corrosion that the aluminum wheel might have left behind. Look around the studs and brake drum face for this corrosion.

Torque values are different between steel and aluminium, and depending on the lug nut, if it has a closed end, possible to bottom out the nut with a steel wheel with the steel wheel being thinner than the aluminium.
