  • 345GK Hitch Recommendation? (New Owner)

We just bought a 345GK and haven’t bought the hitch yet, picking it up in a few weeks. Considering either the B&W Companion or the Anderson Ultimate hitch. Are there any Anderson hitch owners and are you happy with it? Thank you!

Here's where I moved your question. As I have a travel trailer I can't address your question directly, so will leave that to others. Again, welcome to the forum!

      First welcome
You have a heavy trailer. As an engineer I DO NOT RECOMMEND the Anderson AUH as it can and has failed. (do a search on AUH failures) If use it could void you frame warranty as I do not believe it is approved for use yet by GD or Lippert (frame manufacturer). Call GD customer service to verify. Note to those who love thier AUH - sorry. I just don't like the structural design of the AUH as it is susceptible to uneven loading's such as emergency breaking/maneuvers or an accident. I have also personally seen several red connector blocks with cracking. This is just an opinion and I respect others.

I have the 25K B&W OEM companion and absolutely love it, Best hitch I have ever had and I have had a few. Whats great about it is in uneven situations where my old premium Reese hitch was a pain to unlock (get the jaws to open) the BMW is easy. When unlocked you can drive out of it even if the jaws are still closed. Same for hooking up. You don't say what TV you have, but if a short bed they do make a slider.

      Get the B&W OEM Companion

I’ll second the B&W Companion hitch. We recently bought a new to us 2021 GD 337RLS, previous owner had an AUH, I opted not to buy it and went with B&W. I may be a little biased since they are made just down the road from us here in Kansas. I don’t have anything else to compare it to since this is our first 5th wheel, but I felt like it towed great. Had read about 5th wheels chucking and being rough, not with the Companion. I have not ruled out their slider version since we have a short bed, but last weekend I was able to get it backed into our driveway. We live on a street that ends in a cul-de-sac and I don’t think the street seems as wide as like normal through streets, could just be me. See how our first season goes and then will probably make a decision on a slider. I picked up my B&W used off FB Marketplace for a discounted price and only used a couple times.

Just a note of appreciation to you guys, I am picking up a 337RLS soon and I opted to go with a B&W not just because of the other reviews I read other places but because I saw you guys talking well of them. I have an F250 with a short bed but I also decided to not get the slider for now. I may regret that later but I can always sell and buy it if I need one. I tend to be pretty careful and I've hauled trailers before so I generally can keep myself out of trouble so it didn't seem like it was worth the extra cost. It's hooked up to a B&W gooseneck drop ball setup in the bed.

Don't fret about the slider and having to sell you hitch. The hitch head you have will fit the slider base if I have read the B&W information correctly. All you will nee to get is the base. If you find you need the slider I suggest talking to B&W. The do answer thier phone and emails.

            Hope this helps

A key benefit of a slider hitch, which is overlooked by many, is the clearance between the back of the truck and the front of the 5th wheel trailer. This has been previously discussed in many of the related (and rather long) threads on this topic. To summarize here . . . particularly with a Ford truck (see attached pdf comparing GM and Ford distance from hitch point to open tailgate) the slider hitch allows you to open either the tailgate or the front compartment hatch while hitched, by moving the slider back in the bed. This also allows you to hitch/unhitch at an angle with the tailgate open. Hitching is easy because you can see the hitch out the back window of the truck.

There is a lot more to a manual slider hitch than just clearance to the truck cab while turning. I towed for many years with a Reese manual slider hitch and recently upgraded to a B&W . . . which I am very pleased with. If you have a current B&W hitch, you can purchase just the slider base to replace the fixed base.
