  • Handle for removing hitch receiver

I’ve tried a couple of commercially available options for handles to remove the hitch receiver on my Curt Weight Distribution hitch with an 6” drop and have returned them because they didn’t work for me. I saw this on an episode of the Keep Your Daydream Podcast. I bought a piece of 3/4” threaded rod and nuts and lockwashers to fit at Home Depot. Also needed a set a bicycle handlebar grips from Walmart. I cut the threaded rod to size and put it through the top hole of the height adjustment on the Weight distribution hitch receiver and added a lock washer to each side and tightened up the bolts. The bicycle handlebar grips are 1” diameter so I shimmed them with a couple of pieces of old garden hose to get them to fit the 3/4” threaded bolt and then painted the bolt black. Below are pictures of the end result. This cost about $25 to put together and the commercial ones that didn’t work for me were $40 or more. Just wanted to share….

Nice setup. Thanks for sharing for those who may need the option.

By chance did you try to find handle bar grips that would fit, or do they not make them that small? I wonder is someone with a lathe could make an one out of Aluminium where one of the handles is a male threaded shank and the other a female?

Great solution! Now I'm curious. I just grab my hitch and yank it out. It's heavy, but handles would just make it a little heavier. Does the ergonomics of the handle help much?

They give you a lot more balance than anything else I’ve tried. My Curt hitch is a 6” drop and probably weighs 40 lbs or more.
