  • Half-ton towing 3210BH

    My family just purchased the GD Imagine 3210BH. We are new to towing such a large vehicle. We own a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 6.2 litre and the numbers are all within range for towing the camper, however everyone’s opinion is we may be in trouble. For peace of mind, is anyone on here using a half-ton pickup and towing the 3210BH? I’ve done tons of research online and the data all points to being okay, although several opinions of we won’t be safe and this is the last thing we want. Just hoping for some first-hand advice from anyone in the same scenario!

    I can't give you firsthand experience with the setup, but if you'll be more specific with the numbers that seem to say you're OK I can certainly validate your research with an (informed) opinion.

    At a minimum I'll need GVWR (truck and trailer) and the payload capacity (from truck sticker). Any other detail will help (axle ratings, tire ratings, hitch rating, etc).

      Your limitation is likely to be truck payload. What is the number on the yellow tire label on the driver’s door frame? Cargo weight must not exceed ??? Lbs. Your trailer has a GVWR of about 10,000 lbs. You should plan for a hitch weight approaching 15% of this (1500 lbs). The truck payload should cover hitch weight plus people and anything else in the truck. If all these numbers line up, your plan should be doable.

        Rob and Howard are right on with those numbers. From a qualitative standpoint what wheelbase do you have on the truck? A trailer that long would definitely benefit from the longer wheelbase options (not sure on what GM's options are I am more familiar with Ford). My in laws towed a similar length trailer with a F150 with the 5.5" bed, 144" wheelbase. They found that even with sway control and being within the weight specs it handled poorly in the wind at highway speeds. At the other end of the spectrum I occasionally would tow his trailer with my F350 long bed, and did not use any sway control or weight distribution (different size receiver in my truck) and it towed just fine. That is just an example so show the difference that the weight and wheelbase of the tow vehicle can make.

          3210BH:
          GVWR: 10,195
          UVW: 8,394
          Tongue weight at max GVRW: about 1,200

          2021 Chevy Crew cab 4x4 6.2L (making assumptions here):
          GVWR:: 6,800-7,300
          GCVWR: 15,000
          Max conventional towing: 9,200
          Payload: max 1,870

          With max trailering package
          GVWR::6,800-7,300
          GCVWR: 17,800
          Max Conventional towing:11,900
          Payload: max 2,090

          Let's assume you have the max trailering package with max GVWR. You take the GCVWR (17,800) and subtract your GVWR (7,300) to get 10,500 pounds left for the trailer. So with this package, the GCVWR is good. The trailer is also within the max conventional towing capacities. You will have to know your specific payload and tongue weight of the trailer to determine your payload capacity is good.

          If you do not have the max trailering package, you will be over your GVWR capacity by over 2,000#. You will also be over your max conventional towing capacity by almost 1,000# and will likely be over your payload as well.

          The truck will certainly pull the trailer without issue. It's the comfort level of the driver that determines how much tow vehicle you want.
