  • Tow vehicle steering alignment off at times when towing

So, I just made it back from WA state to Ohio towing my Imagine 2670MK with a 2020 Chevy 2500 6.6L Gas. I have a Husky Centerline TS WDH (https://www.huskytow.com/husky-towin...ribution-hitch}, it gets its anti-sway function from the friction of the spring bars riding on the brackets of the frame. My problem I noticed was there would be times I was on a straight road and would have to hold my steering wheel a little to the left to keep going straight, like something was out of alignment. I'd say easily it would be like this 50 miles or more at times. Other times, I'd be driving on a straight road and my steering wheel would be straight like nothing was wrong. The truck is fine when not towing and doesn't seem out of alignment, plus it's new. What could be causing this? Could it be any slope in the road, wind, or how the trailer is balanced? When I make a sharp left or right turn you can really hear those spring bars slide on the brackets. Then when I straighten back out, say to get on an on ramp, I thought maybe the bars didn't always slide equal again on the bracket which could cause a slight adjustment in my steering.

Vehicle alignment isn't a "sometimes" thing - it's either within specs or not (unless you have severely worn front end components, which I doubt on a 2020 truck). Are you sure there weren't crosswinds? Is the WD hitch adjusted correctly and putting enough weight on the truck's front axle? I've used that hitch design before and the anti-sway function of the spring bars will not affect steering of the tow vehicle.

Wind and road slope will cause this. I have had wind effect just the truck while driving. I have also noticed that some of the roads are sloped more than others from side to side and this will also cause a little tiller input to keep it straight.

I agree with the other. I also tow a travel trailer and experience the same issue. The road slope and wind direction can really have an effect on the "feel" of the steering. What is really unnerving to me is when I hit a stretch of road that is sloped off to the left. It changes the whole towing dynamic.

Road slope as others have stated can do this. I did however run into something similar to this where my truck would sort of dog leg then suddenly it would shift back and run straight. This would repeat for the duration of the trip. Found that the area on the underside of my equalizer hitch was dry and was binding. Applying some grease to the hitch at all shiny areas and re-torqueing the swing arm pivots resulted in good tracking. Now I grease everything before each trip and wipe it clean when at camp.

Second Chance Guest There were definately crosswinds at times. I just wasn't sure how normal this was. Like I said, I estimate to have driven maybe close to 50 miles or more at a time with me having to hold the steering wheel off center driving on an apparent straight road. I thought wind and road slope could be the culprit, but also thought it wouldn't stay this way for miles upon miles. I'm not supposed to grease the point where the spring bars meet the bracket since they operate off of friction. I'll chock it up to the road and wind conditions since there were times it was fine. Just wondered since when I towed a trailer out to WA last year I don't remember this. That was a smaller trailer, truck, and different WDH however. Thanks, all!

              chrisopy ,

True you are not supposed to grease the spring bars at the L brackets, but all shiny points on the hitch head should be greased.
