  • Toy Hauler Towing

Just purchased a 2021 Grand Design 31g toy hauler with the 13' garage in the rear. According to the specs, I have 2024 lbs of cargo available without exceeding the GVWR. My side by side is about 1600 lbs, so with the side by side in the garage and the usual stuff that goes into a travel trailer, I will be right at my GVWR. I was a little nervous about the limited cargo weight available and the 1600 lb side by side in the garage in the back of the trailer but was told by the sales people, it shouldn't be a problem. Just wondering if anyone has towed with that much weight in the back of their travel trailer toy hauler and how that much weight back there in the garage affects the how the trailer tows. I have the weight distribution hitch so it tows great with no weight in the garage. I haven't towed yet with the side by side loaded in the garage. Just trying to get an idea of what to expect before I load up the side by side and hit the road. Thanks!

What about clothes, equipment, camping gear and fuel? It will be tough camping with no dishes or propane

There is another thread tonight about worn brakes where someone said "dealers lie" that made me laugh but may apply here. The posted dry weight and available cargo capacity are pretty much a fictional number, it does not include propane or any "options". Your trailer should have a sticker with your actual available payload as built, but I think that still does not include propane or a battery. I would advise a trip to the scales to see exactly where your weight is. You know the weight of your SXS, so you can weigh it without and add that in. You may be overweight, but since you own the trailer that ship has sailed. That said you should at least know and plan accordingly.

You want 15% of your loaded trailer weight on the tongue, so you may need to adjust how you load the side by side to achieve that. Forward or rearward as far as possible can make a significant difference in tongue weight, as well as pulling it in vs backing it in. Proper tongue weight will prevent sway. A tongue weight scale will be your friend here, something like this:

Thank you for the information. Apparently, the factory weighed everything before shipping because my paperwork included a spec sheet with actual weights for my trailer. The 2024 lbs of available cargo takes into consideration the weight of the propane but does not include the weight of fresh water. I figured if I do any dry camping, I'll fill the fresh water when I get close to my camp spot as opposed to hauling 750 lbs of water up the highway. According to their spec sheet, the tongue weight is 1824 lbs which is almost exactly 15% of my GVWR. I will definitely locate a scale to get the exact weight. Makes me wonder though, why they would build a "toy hauler" with a 13' garage and then have such a low cargo capacity. I did a little research on my SXS and its listed as the second lightest in its class, so not an overly heavy toy. The garage is large enough to hold 4 quads, but at approx. 500 lbs each, that's more weight than my SXS.
