  • Lippert Rotoflex

I have a 2019 Solitude 375RES that was purchased in June of 2019. It came with a Rotoflex pin box installed. I have a Curt Manufacturing A20 hitch in my 2018 3500 HD I used to tow my Carriage Cameo.

During our last trip (only been out three times) I started experiencing a rather unsettling clunk every time I stopped and started. I thought maybe the brake control was not set high enough so I turned it up. The clunk continued.

I was in Nashville and decided to call Lippert and ask about the clunking noise. The tech on the phone told me that the rubber pad had "slipped" and I needed to get a mobile welder to weld the hitch so the rubber plate would not move. I called around but was not able to get a mobile welder on short notice and since I had to get back home for work I went without welding the hitch.

I also called Curt Manufacturing and explained the noise and he told me that the Curt A20 is not compatible with the Rotoflex..

Lippert has sent me a new Rotoflex but I am hesitant to install it. Anyone have this experience?

I just did a Google search on Rotoflex and Curt A20. eTrailer was answering a similar question on their website. Their contact at Curt said the two "were" compatible. So it looks like different answers are being given by Curt. If it were me, I think I'd do some more research on that possible weld fix for the issue.

Here is the Q&A on eTrailer:

Funny how you get different stories from different sources. The Curt guy told me that their hitch allows the Rotoflex to "over rotate" and damages the rubber pad allowing it to slip. He suggested looking at a lockout device similar to the Andersen Rota-Flex Lockout Kit on it.

The so-called "Andersen lock-out kit" should work with any hitch... you just loose the dampening effects of the RotoFlex system. I'm not a big fan of the RotoFlex since it allows the kingpin to rotate off vertical so far. I'm really glad GD switched to the MORryde pin boxes which keep the pin vertical and the pin plate horizontal (and the MORryde is what will be coming on our new Solitude - yay!).

Just another reference point: I've got the Rotoflex and a B&W Companion hitch. No over-rotation issues in two seasons, and no chucking except on horrible roads and bad road/bridge junctions, like at the base between two hills.

Oh so you have been to Michigan...referencing those horrible roads.
