  • Towing Capacity

I'm sorry to post another towing capacity question but everyone I speak with tells me something different. I own a 2021 Silverado 2500 4WD LTX Crew Cab Z71 off road package. Have the fifth wheel package. ENG: DURAMAX 6.6L TURBO-DIESEL TRANS: ALLISON 10-SPEED AUTO Rear Axle 3.42, 20" Wheels Single (No Duels)

Chevy says trailer weight can be 18.500

Looking at a two different GD

Will this truck pull either of these trailers? If so, will it be a struggle? Thanks

That truck will pull each of those fine from a power perspective, but your payload is going to be your limiting factor. There is a sticker inside your driver's door jam that should list the capacities. Can you take a photo of that and post it up?

Those are pretty high hitch weights, and GD tends to underestimate these figures.

The only advertised weight from a RV manufacture that is actual is the GVWR, the rest of the weights are purely general. I agree with above that the payload sticker on the door will tell you what you will be capable of, I am going to guess that it is somewhere around #2500. With fifth wheel RV's it is customary to calculate pin weight at 20% of the weight of the RV, worst case scenario is the GVWR 16,800 # X 20% = 3360# of pin weight. There are owners out there that are doing this almost exact thing with no issues as claimed. Myself, I like to be well ahead of the weight thing, more truck the better off I feel. Check out my signature and you will see what I mean.

Thanks All. We were looking for the front living area and unfortunately, appears the only size is 38" +. In hindsight should have got the 3500. Just hard to find trucks right now given covid.

BobM I would take it one step past Brian and say a fifth wheel could be in the 20-25% range, and I would expect a front living to be on the upper end of that range. With the weight of a hitch included I think you could be well above your may payload and truck GVWR. Only you can decide if that is a risk you are willing to take. Many will say the difference between a 250 and 350 is purely on the label, personally regardless of the numbers for that size of rig I would be looking at a dually.

In my opinion you will be over your capacity, a one ton would be better, however I see 3/4 tons pulling the big fifth wheels and toyhaulers all the time son it can be done.

On the drivers door frame, there will be another label. It will likely be yellow and will include tire pressure information. There will be a line something like " weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed ??? lbs". This is the payload of your specific truck including all its factory options. Once you allow for weight of occupants and hitch, this will leave you something less than 2000 lbs for the loaded pin weight of the 5th wheel trailer.

With the 5th wheel layout that you are considering, you will likely be well into one ton dually territory.

Rob -- My yellow sticker says. the combined weight of occupants and cargo should never exceed 3,073 lbs.

                      Hi Bob,

I knew that GM had increased payload on their 3/4 ton trucks, but I did not know that they had gone that far! This is good news. Not too long ago, a 3/4 ton truck was limited to 10,000 lbs GVWR. (admittedly an artificial number driven by licensing requirements in some states). Thus, the truck would often weigh 8000 lbs . . . leaving only 2000 lbs for payload. Way less (on paper) than what the truck could actually carry. There are very few physical differences (some will say none) between a 2500 and a 3500.

This may be a dumb question but when I go to the Chevrolet site, it says my truck has a payload of around 4517 LBS. Why would this be different than the sticker in the door?

Not a dumb question at all, weight capacity values are all over the place sometimes. The payload on each vehicle will be calculated by subtracting the weight of all the accessories and parts in the vehicle from the GVWR. So when you buy a truck with a nice infotainment system, that comes out of payload. Get a bed liner? Subtract that too. The website will probably list a 'typical' payload, but since each model comes with different options you can add, each vehicle will be different.

A good example from when I was shopping for our F150, is the moonroof. Every vehicle I looked at with it had a payload of 200-300 less than those without it. I opted for no moonroof

Yep... plus it is possible that payload number on the website was quoted for a 4x2 with gas engine (they like to show big numbers on marketing materials). Your diesel and 4x4 would reduce that payload capacity significantly.

One possible reason is that the 4517 lbs might be for the gasoline engine model. The diesel engine is much heavier and therefore the diesel truck has a lower cargo carrying capacity.
