  • 5th wheel to truck bed clearance

I'm looking at a Reflection 150 280RS and a Chevy Silverado 2500 with 20" wheels. I'm told by GD that the underside of the trailer overhang is 61" from the ground. The truck with 20" wheels has a measurement of 58" from ground to top of tailgate. Which leaves 3" clearance. I understand that the weight of the trailer will cause some squat on the truck, but neither truck nor trailer reps are able to state how much, and whether the squat will be enough to provide sufficient clearance. I would appreciate hearing other experiences and recommendations.

It will squat "together", the trailer pin will push the bed down with the springs so it won't change your clearance. Speaking from experience you want at least 7" of clearance. Sometimes there's adjustment in the hitch or pin box for height, but you also want the rig to tow level as well to prevent overloading an axle.

Thanks for the feedback! Think I'll expand my search for a truck with 17" wheels.

I'm trying to understand what's different here. What hitch do you have? I have a 2022 GMC 3500 with the B&W and am towing a new 303RLS. I have at least 6 or 7 " of clearance with the 20" wheels.

The size of the wheels (with stock tires) has no affect on this discussion. The truck manufacturer selects tire aspect ratio to create the same tire outside diameter with all rim sizes. Usually in the 33” to 34” range on current trucks. If they did not do this, speedometer and odometer calibration would have to be changed based on wheel/tire options . . . way too complex for the manufacturing environment.

If you set your hitch and pin box at 6” of clearance, think of this as starting at 64” overhang height and 58” tailgate height. Everything will “squat” together as ncitro Neil explains and will come down about 3”. This will bring the overhang height back to that 61” level measurement (64” - 3”) but the 6” of clearance will not change. 6” clearance is on the low side. Most would choose 7” of clearance, even if this means towing the 5th wheel an inch high at the front.

I would totally agree on the 7" vice 6" especially if you do any off road camping or maneuver in difficult terrain. I have bumped my bed rails and camper bottom below with my other truck and fifth wheel.
