Yoda Cate&Rob Unfortunately the level of knowledge in all industries is declining. As mentioned the first thing I do on just about any job home, auto, or RV is grab the meter and test polarity of the wiring. Too many times I have ran across crossed wires.
One of my co-workers is a parts changer. Always hits me up with what would I do after he has spent $100's on parts and changed them to get something up and running. Never understands why I am willing to take a few extra minutes to dig into a problem and check what he thinks is completely unrelated things. Too many times does one seemingly unrelated issue cause several other systems to do strange things.
