My wife is part of one or tow of the Grand Design Facebook groups and she showed me a photo of someone's 5th Wheel that had the lower front passenger side corner damaged and surface melted due to the Diesel regeneration process of the GM exhaust cleaning system. The photo looked pretty bad but did not appear to have caught fire. The poster said it happened when pulling the camper in the mountains and the regen process started while towing. The regen process can put out some substantial heat during the process. Has anyone ever heard of the regen melting or burning a 5th wheel camper before? Is it unique to GM where the exhaust faces to the rear vs. to the side? The poster did not say if he had done any exhaust mods. The damaged areas is also where the LP tanks are too - yikes! I thought about an exhaust mod to turn my exhaust tip to the side but manual says not to do that and would void warranty. During some other research online we saw a few other described incidents from GM owners.
A side note - During our trip to OBX last week I was driving (unhitched) in my 2022 GMC 3500 when I got a "Exhaust Filter Cleaning - Must Keep Driving" message on my dash with a 4 tone alert. Well, after driving up and down Hwy 158 for over 100 miles to try and clear it, I went to a dealer in NC the next day and the shop manually did the regen and reset the message. I have not had any issue since then and towed back to Virginia just fine. Owners online have had this issue and effects range from the truck going into "limp mode" then shop repairs, check engine lights & shop, to my lesser issue of it not completing the regen, or completing the regen and sensors not resetting. Any other 20-23 GM diesel owners having trouble on the regen?
